Are cheap side steps any good?

My genuine fixed side steps have again rotted away, been looking at different options and wondering if any of the ‘cheap’ one on the bay at around £120 are any good or am I just throwing cash away?
Has anyone had them?

Cheers
Steve.

"You get what you pay for" is my motto. Saying that though you just might be lucky.

I paid £234.99 (incl delivery, nuts and bolts & front mud flaps) from Direct 4x4 in 2015.

NB: I did underseal the " 1 inch handy-tube" frame before fitting and replaced all of the supplied
fixings with stainless ones.

So far so good Thumbs Up

Yes I firmly believe that too, except I have always been disappointed in the expensive genuine steps on everything, my D4 tubes were replaced at 2 years old under warranty, and my year old 110 ones that live inside are all crusty brown already.

I agree you get what you pay for.... that said, a step on my TD6 rusted through and I got some cheap ones that were OE “style”, ie the plastic edge trim looked the same, but riveted on, original ones had Philips screws etc. I left the OE front mudflap on, and pushed the copy step into it.

Changed the other side to match. No issues when it was sold a few years after.....

I spent ages researching this and wondering whether to spend £800 on original ones.
I eventually chose the below £149.99 from Direct 4x4 .

When I compared them to the original genuine LR factory fitted ones there is barely any difference - see pics below where they are offered up. Someone pointed out there's a rivet instead of a screw somewhere.
The original genuine LR ones were rusted through.

I gave the new ones a few extra coats of paint underneath before they went on - why not!..

Good luck!

Well that certainly looks a good plan and can’t complain at £150
Thanks for the help.

Yeah, can replace those a further 4 times after, and still have saved.

The ones on my 2011 creak and crack sometimes.

I shall probably do the same when they go.

I have been waiting for them to come back in but nothing yet, also noticed that all the ‘cheap’ £120 ish ones on eBay have gone too. So just ordered some Terrafirma ons at £225 so I will see what they are like next week when they turn up.

Replaced mine before I sold it, Didn't want cheap Chinese ones so bought some from a company in the UK that lead me to believe they were British made. Turned out to be Chinese rubbish

A friends son works in a local land rover garage, parts department. they had some in. Made in china Three things in a blokes life his dog,his car and a Cornish pasty, nothing else matters.

Genuine ones rot and the cheap ones rot. Not sure genuine ones last any longer TBH.

I fitted some non-genuine ones to mine (about £180 from memory), they didn't look any different to the genuine ones that came off other than the rubber tread being fixed rather crudely with self tapping screws.

I modified them slightly to hopefully give them a longer life by:
* Reinforcing the rear box section after the fixing point by tack welding in a length of solid bar, as I find this part bends when they start to rot & weaken from the kids getting in and out of the back seats and stepping on the very rear part of the step.
* Sealed up all holes at the front with outdoor black silicon to stop muck getting trapped inside, but leaving rear holes open as drains
* I also gave them a good coat of underseal to slow the rotting process.

Most are crap and don't last and are detrimental to the cars look in my opinion, unless you have the retractable ones. If your vertically challenged consider using a small ally folding stepladder or a box... Laughing 2008 L322 Vogue 3.6 TDV8 in Java Black with parchment and Navy interior. 125000mls.

I fully agree, I'm not keen on side steps at all, in fact they're a pain if you drive on single track roads as much as we do on the 3 mile school run and have to regularly pull over onto the verge.

Also gone through a couple of N/S mud flaps now, which catch all too easily unless you're quick raising the vehicle height, before pulling out of the way of cars which can't pull over without ripping something important off.

But the kids love them and the missus is, ahem.. vertically challenged - so she loves them too. Rolling with laughter
