Spain 2008 Range Rover Vogue SE TDV8 Santorini Black
Engine System Fault

Always fancied a Range Rover so bought a 2008 Vogue SE TDV8 about 6 weeks ago with full main dealer service history and 68000 miles on the clock. Set off for Spain with the caravan on the back and halfway down through Spain we had ‘Engine System Fault’. It continued to drive OK but it had reduced power under about 3000 rpm so I drove it on manual gear changes to keep the revs up. Took it into one garage who said it was r/hand turbo actuator stuck and after 4 days said they had to take the body off and turbo out!!! I got the car back! So onward and upward, I’ll keep you posted on progress when I can find a Spanish garage which can deal with Range Rovers.

The body does not need to come off to replace a turbo.

Also it is possible to sometimes free up the actuators with wd40 or silicone spray and the right hand one is easy enough to get right too to spray and hopefully free up.

Have they checked all the hoses for splits as if you drove half way across Spain I'm sure the actuator fault would have shown much earlier as if it's stuck it's stuck surely?

Also did they give you the codes it threw up at all? Current 2007 TDV8 Vogue Buckingham Blue

I managed to change the O/S actuator arm in situ, it’s a bit of a faff but not impossible. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue
Had- 2008 TDV8 Vogue SE in Java black
Had - 2007 S/C in Stornoway Grey

Hi Kbald,
They said that they had checked the hoses for splits and the ‘Engine System Fault’ was showing from halfway down Spain but as the car was going OK, just not much power/torque below about 3000 rpm, I carried on. I have read that the r/hand side can be freed up with WD40 but as I don’t know what the actuator looks like, I can’t have a go at it. I’m not a bad amateur mechanic but it would help to know where to find it and what it looks like.

Hi it's a metal arm you can get too by removing the wheel and wheel liner. The left hand side one is harder to find.

I've found this thread that might help. I've lubricated mine (actuator that is) but was a year ago so describing it would be difficult

If I were you I'd check the top hoses too myself including under the webbing on the left hand one as they can go under there and not be immediately obvious. Current 2007 TDV8 Vogue Buckingham Blue

Hey kbald,
Thanks for pointing me in the direction of that post which is very informative and I think I will check the hoses first just for my own peace of mind. I have found a Land Rover/Jaguar workshop about an hour away with diagnostic and repair facilities so if I can’t make a difference at least I have got a good backup.

Took the car into the Land Rover/Jaguar dealer today and they put it on their diagnostic m/c and confirmed it had low pressure on the r/h turbo and quoted me €2785 to fit a new one! Definitely going to have a go tomorrow.

What is the error code? It could be a crack in the inlet manifold, which is a common issue. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

Alanm3 - they didn’t say what the error code was but they said it was low pressure in the r/h turbo. I have had the r/h wheel off today and checked the actuator which is moving freely, about 20mm up and down so sprayed it with WD40 anyway. Checked the inter cooler hoses and still have ‘Engine System Fault’.

You can check for manifold leaks by spraying soapy water onto it and wait to see if any bubbles appear, it's quite a well known issue.

Can you ask the garage for the code they saw?

Did you remove the Uk passenger side intercooler
Hose and pull back the webbing.

Sounds like it’s got a hole deep under the webbing. It’s where they go and that would give low pressure and the engine system fault.

You have to remove it to find the split usually. There’s a how to do a temporary inter cooler hose fix on the wiki, which I did ages ago. It’s a cheap and easy job and a good place to start. A couple of screw on hose clips.

Alanm_3 and northernmonkeyjones, I’ve took both inter cooler hoses off which are in very good condition and no splits/holes or soft spots and I sprayed the inlet manifold with soapy water and no bubbles. The car has just over 68000 miles with full main dealer service history so I’m beginning to think that there is a problem with the turbo having gone through the common faults.

You really need to get the error code(s) to get a more accurate diagnosis.
Can you go back to the garage and ask them to put it on their diagnostics and tell you the codes? Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue
