Infamous Tdv8?

I have been surfing the web for info regarding trouble with the infotainment system on my 07 FFRR. And have seen on multible post from Black box solutions that they refers to the infamous Tdv8 when it is mentioned. Hasn't seen this description elswhere, but maybe this is the default description on this engine🤔.
Why is this? Anyone🙂

I'm not sure there's a Range Rover engine or model that doesn't have some level of infamy!

🤣Think You'r righth. I have a 78 RR 3.5
And a 05 Freelander 1.8 in My stable.
3.5 has been flawless, but 1.8 have given me some resistance🙂. But, come to think abaut it, I have not changed the head gasket on two years now😮

Of course Freelanders are infamous too, especially the 1.8! In reality I think for many people Land Rover of any kind = infamous.

I’m not sure they’re that infamous, they can have turbo failures but many do not, it depends on how the car has been treated throughout its life.

Given the volumes made of them the TDV8 is to date the best and most reliable engine ever fitted to a RR - especially the 4.4 - I am on my 16th RR, with many more in the family so have a tiny bit of previous experience.

If any RR engines are infamous the VM Diesels fitted to the classics and latterly the V6 Diesels in later models are the ones that have give the issues - which in summary has resulted in total engine failure 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

Oh, yeah. My brother has a 87 VM engined RR. I was nervous standing by it, waiting for it to explode any minute.
We changed it for a 300tdi and gearbox from a D1🙂

That would have been the 2.4 VM if it’s an 87, lost an engine in one of those - LR provided the engine - I had to pay for the fitting. Also had trouble with the next RR a 2.5 VM, and the one after that - another 2.5 VM - 100% failure rate in one form or another. They had 4 separate cylinder heads - one for each cylinder and an extremely nasty habit of blowing head gaskets. For a diesel though at that time they were pretty quick.

To date - and fingers crossed !!!!! - I have never had any issues with any V8 engined RR’s either petrol or diesel 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

I'd say it's to help them sell their diagnostic kit? Wink

As has been stated above, the TDV8 is a very reliable engine whether in 3.6 or 4.4 form.
