New owner, over boost error code and DPF question

Hi,

Any advice gratefully received. I'll try to keep it brief.

I recently (6 weeks ago) bought a 2017 / 39,000 mile RR. Drove it 100 miles home no problem. Couple of days later a yellow warning light for turbo over boost appeared. Contacted seller and told it was likely to be a sticking turbo vane and to run some V-Power and a bottle of turbo cleaner through it. We think the car had been off the road c.3 months during lock down so this seemed logical.

This appeared to work and we reverted to standard diesel. However, over the next 1,200 miles the light has come on twice more (about 800 of it 40+mph). The most recent time the warning light has been on a week and the DPF warning has now gone red and we are on reduced power.

I contacted seller again yesterday and spoke to their garage. Was told not to worry about the warning lights and that it needs prolonged use of premium diesel (and some more cleaners) for at least the next few tanks to properly clean the variable turbo of carbon build-up. If this doesn't solve it in the next 7/10 days I will take it back to them.

I have a few concerns:
- Am I being told a load of rubbish?
- Is driving with the DPF full and on reduced power OK?
- I assume the DPF has filled because of the turbo yellow warning light and will remain until that has gone out?

Thanks in advance. Having read up on the DPF problems others have had I want to nip it in the bud and avoid a long term problem. We previously had a 2015 Disco Sport which I assume had a similar VGT turbo. Had no issues with that on cheap diesel or ever saw a DPF filter message.

Agreed. Was told the first thing they would try was running a few miles with premium fuel and a bottle of turbo cleaner. Thought I could do that bit myself.

Will be taking it back next week if any doubts.

Was really wondering if a red DPF light needs to go to a garage to be cleared. They said once the cleaner does its work on the turbo and that warning light goes out the DPF cleaning cycle should start.

The car will not regen with a red light. AFAIK the only way is for a garage to use their software and reset the parameters to make it go. LR charge around £90 for this.

Just take it back. I suspect either an intake leak or it’s been used for too many short journeys. For them to fix, not you. 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

As above, it’s for the supplying garage to resolve, the information they are giving at the moment sounds more like a way to keep you from bringing it back. Red DPF full warning cannot always be rectified by a forced diagnostics regeneration request, both Dr Rob and I have both had to have the DPF removed and cleaned to clear the Red warning (L322 model but principal is the same). Take the time to look up your consumer rights as it used to be that you had to give the supplying garage 1 chance to rectify any issues before you could reject the car. Most additives such as DPF cleaner, EGR cleaner, injector cleaner etc that your pour in tank do absolutely nothing other than to help empty your wallet. 2011 TDV8 Vogue SE

Leave it with them until they prove its fixed and ask for a detailed analysis of their findings. I would expect them to start with a HIGH pressure smoke test for any intake leaks as a bare minimum. The statement around expensive diesel is Censored

also get them to do a DPF pressure test. If the DPF IS filling up, it will have a psi of 15 or so. Mine was 2psi (therefore empty) but the car still tried to regen as the sensors' parameters were incorrectly set. This is an easy and cheap way to check your physical DPF levels Thumbs Up

Guys,

Thought I'd post a update for those interested. After plugging into the LR code reader the problem was identified as sticking throttle bodies causing the turbo over-boost, apparently when rolling off the throttle. They have been replaced. The garage also loaded up a recent software update that changes the Nox monitoring perimeters.

We have driven around 800 miles in the last 10 days. No warning lights so far......

Thanks for your advice. Retailer (Auto100) and their partner garage (Colemans) were good to their word and sorted it out.
