I’d like what would be effectively an extended test drive of a late L322, so would like to find somewhere that hires them.

I know this is a bit random and probably doesn’t exist, but does anyone know of any specialist companies that do daily hire of such vehicles?

Might struggle with that given l322 are 10+ years old. Best bet would be go to a garage that's selling one and see if you can agree to test drive it over the weekend. Might need to leave a substantial deposit or some form of security for them to agree tho

Am most likely to buy privately and don’t want to waste garage owners’ time though.

Dunno who I’m kidding about whether I’m still considering getting one... invest clearly already made my mind up!

Just do it. Find a good one and it will serve you well. If you can go for the latest 4.4 tdv8 don’t worry too much about specific spec, condition and history beat the odd extra bauble  There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

My head agrees with you about provenance and history.

Though I seem to remember when I bought the Mondeo and couldn’t take my eyes off the COOLED SEATS and HEATED SCREEN ha ha...

It’s still standard’ish bar the exhaust system, soon will have a remap and pulley upgrade

I think it’s possible to get a bargain, and expensive ones could break down also.

103K miles. Paid £12K at a secondhand car dealer in Middlesborough back in March or February this year. Bought it unseen 😬🤣 No horrors, all good.

But like with any second hand car I buy, I don’t trust the service history. Even though the last service was done at a mates Land Rover specialist according to them. I gave it a full service, gearbox mega flush and changed the supercharger oil as well. So then to me it is a known state again.

Especially as the last owner or garage put some nasty Chinese cheap tyres on it.

Also the car config was wrong. So with the IID tool I re enabled the puddle lights, configured the correct cooled/heated seas, enabled timed heater, set the correct tyre circumference for the speedo, and enabled daylight running lights. And recalibrated the height of the car as it was too high in standard mode for my liking.

Only problem is my windscreen washers stopped working, and the rear one works but leaks. Oh and I changed the brake pads and found they didn’t have the sensors enabled.

So just minor maintenance things in my opinion that are with any car.

My main problem with the 5.0SC is that it sounded too civilised. But I had that fixed as with a bespoke exhaust.

Also saw two other ones, one was a black edition but missing the rear parcel shelf and they wouldn’t drop the price. Those are hard to get secondhand with the reclining seats and very expensive new. And the other one was an absolute shed. Really horrible.
