Kayaks and Roof Rack options

Hi all

Just joined looking at a run out L322 as I have always wanted one, long time Land Rover fan I have had Range Rover classic, disco and still have a 109 stage 1, and 110 V8

One thing that has put me of having a LR as a daily driver i my sport I am a keen White Water kayaker and regularly have boats on the roof of my estate cars (current one a Subaru Outback)

Anyone else a boater? If so what have you done about it as the height can make loading tricky as well as tying down, I know my playboat will fit inside, it’s more my full 9 foot creaker that i am asking about, ideally I would want the ability to carry 4 when social distancing allows

Thule roof bars fit Thumbs Up

For straps - stand on the back wheel & open the front door & use that as a step.

I've been known to take a few extra bits & pieces on holiday Whistle
I had the 4th Kayak under the Jeep.

Thanks, do you use “uprights” ? It’s the threading of them I would need to do

Other options are the van racks that slide ....

The boats might come on and off 2/3 times a day if I do laps

Mine was actually a one time thing - I took the kayaks to Bordeaux and they are still there. The Jeep came back & forth a few times though.

If I was doing it regularly I'd have bought all the toys that Thule sell Very Happy

One of these would be very handy though - I use one when I wash it - https://www.wickes.co.uk/Wickes-General-Pu...m/p/106265

I use uprights occasionally to transport kayaks on the roof. I find it easiest to stand on the seats to reach the bottom of the uprights and then the straps are long enough to slide vertically to the top of the uprights from front or rear of the car. Dropping to access level makes little difference. It is pretty high to be honest. I am 6’0” tall. Current: 2010 Range Rover L322

There’s a company in West of Scotland that makes fantastic kayak cradle and rack system. Try this link. https://www.karitek.co.uk/shop/roof-racks-...acks-rails

Yeh I have a friend who uses one on his T5 I wondered if that’s the kind of van system I would need to invest in, though wind noise is not in keeping with the whole RR thing of effortless wafting (why I sold my 300 tdi softdash, it needs the 3.9)

There's also the "genuine" options:

There's also the option of making up a bespoke set of bars from galvanised unistrut channel which can be tailored with uprights etc to allow carrying all sorts.
I have a couple of bars made up with mounting feet that bolt directly into the threaded roof fixings without the need to remove the flaps that cover the openings.

I have been Kayaking for over 45 years and I would never transport boats vertically for more than a few miles if I could possibly avoid it.

The problem is that a boat resting on it's "seam" ("joint" of the deck/hull) will suffer stress along the seam every time the vehicle hits a bump. Carrying boats this way regularly and the seams will split or start to let in water.

Best to use a Vee-Bar of some description, At races I have seen some great setups for multi-boat carriage. E.g. 3 Vee-bars at the bottom, two above and one at the top. Or on a van 4 at the bottom, 3 ,2 and 1 above so that 10 boats were carried on one vehicle!! Shocked

The 'genuine' bars are a fair bit shorter than the Thule (or other) aftermarket ones that extend to the edge of the car. It depends how much you need to carry I suppose....

I think our kind of boating is quite different, unlike carbon or fibre plastic boats are toughest on there sides I have taken ours to Slovenia, France, Spain etc this way, I paddle almost exclusively white water up to G4+

Thanks for the comment

Hum shorter can make them harder to load though I will look at them
