No heater fan - FSR?

2010 VSE

its been 4 days since the heater fan stopped working. all lights on the switches relating to the heater / air con illuminate correctly when they're twiddled yet nothing will cause the fan to run.

I ordered an FSR from ebay with the intention of replacing when it arrived (est. 5th Jan 2021 from listing)

However, this morning the battery was flat (its a good battery and alternator) so that seems to show that I also have a battery drain issue which seems to be consistent with typical FSR fault (though could still also be a faulty fan motor).

Pending arrival of the replacement FSR is it ok to unplug the cable from it to avoid further battery drain?

following my previous post about final stage resistor I may also require a replacement fan.

looking at the options on ebay there seems to be unbranded for £30, Febi 38482 at around £65 or genuine for um... £190.

Does anyone have any experience of either or should I buy genuine?

Pull the fuse in the boot for the main blower fan. F21 I think it is. That will stop battery going flat while you await the new FSR. Be warned that some cheap FSR fail prematurely from what I've read. A Genuine one from Duckworth's is about £40 I think. I might be way out though...

Try the FSR first to see if it solves the problem because changing the main fan is a lot of work!

i read on another thread of here that in some case the FSR fails because the fan bearings have gone tight which results in the motor drawing a higher current than usual which overloads the FSR.

thanks for the help guys I'll try the fuse until the FSR arrives

If yours is still using JGO000021 then I gave 51 quid for a genuine one from LR

Fan fuse was number 64 in the glove box for me but mine is an older one, 2003. I suspect yours is different but maybe this might help someone in future who finds this thread in Google with an older car Smile

Blower motor is a sound shout as the contributory failure but unless you kill a few resistors I probably wouldn't do it preventatively, rather large job so to be avoided unless absolutely necessary.

Is the fan blower still providing air to the rear?
Manual says fan blower is a 10 hour job.
So you really want to be sure the fan blower needs changing.

does anyone have a definitive fuse number for the fan on 2010 VSE? or where I can find this information?

Rambles: the wiki on this forum shows a short cut which then makes it a 3 hour job which sounds much better

ok, found the wiring diagram and *I think* identified the relevant fuse (#21 in the rear right side junction box) but when I take that fuse out and stick the ammeter across the pins that the fuse would normally bridge, there's no current flowing Confused

the rear heater fan continues to work fine.

any further info appreciated

If an fsr fails it usually results in the blower fan only running on full speed only. Thumbs Up

F21 in boot is for the front fan only I believe. There is a separate one for the rear fan: F14 in boot IIRC (a blue 15A) 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

FSR has arrived!

following the wiki on here and the vids on you tube, I'm still not clear on a few things:

1) I've removed the flat, horizontal plastic panel which has the very large plastic screw thing at the rear and holds the ODB connector and footwell lamp.

2) after 5 minutes of looking finally saw the FSR (actually recognised the colours of the wires going to it and eventually saw it with a mirror) and also removed the connector of the FSR.

3) access to FSR is restricted by the horizontal air duct and that doesn't seem to be removable without first removing the trim panel below the steering column and to remove that trim panel is seems that the dash end finishers (piano black) must first be removed. Powerful Uk have a video to show how to remove those but that video does not relate to 2010 VSE cars!!

4) various posts on here and elsewhere state that there is a clip and then just pull the FSR out but on you tube vids the FSR is held in on its 2 mounting holes by torx screws?

anyone who's done this on a 2010 can help please? 2010 VSE [Roger]
