United Kingdom 2008 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Adriatic Blue
Gearbox

Was driving into Glasgow this morning and I was getting a stuttering with the drive. I initially thought it was something to do with the fuel supply or air intake as it was worse on full throttle and no existent on tick over.
When I got off the motorway in Glasgow and came to a stop I could not get going again. Put it in P and reved it a couple of times back in D and then drove off. Wasn't far from my appointment so I needed to do the trick four or five times at the most.
After the meeting called the RAC and now have the car back at my home.
Am now certain that it is gearbox my first thought is the oil has somehow come out, there wasn't much on the bed of the recovery truck so am stumped.
No messages on the dash so do think this is a mechanical issue and not an electronic one. Any ideas appreciated? Current cars

May well be the dreaded lock up clutch failure. Basically the symptoms are if under acceleration it feels like you’re driving over a cattle grid then that’s basically it. Worse case scenario is a gearbox out and repair, but you might get away with a fluid change.
Had it on mine and at the very first symptom I changed the gearbox oil and filter. As luck would have it that completely cured the problem on mine. For good measure I did another oil and filter change about 10k later as you’ll only ever get about two thirds of all the fluid out without a very long drawn out procedure.
Give it a go, you might just be lucky.

Did about 30 miles in it mostly motorway. But yes on full throttle it was like a cattle grid. The car has only done 79500 miles. Hopefully the flush and filter change will cure it. Have noticed that it isn't holding in park either. Current cars

Hello Simon, yep, that’s pretty symptomatic. As I say, you may be lucky with a fluid and filter change or two, certainly worth doing that before anyone tries to convince you to let them take the box out.
As for mileage, LR will have you believe that the box is sealed for life, frankly that’s utter bull. 50k is the service interval for a box fluid and filter change so if you’ve done about 80k that’s already 160% of the necessary service interval. In fact if you speak candidly to an LR Tech they will concede off the record that 50k is where it’s at.
Anyway, I digress, get the fluid changed and you might just have a result, just remember to change it again in another 5-10k. Once you’ve done that you can revert to 50k intervals.

I bought the car with 72k on it was going to sell it with 80k as I do far to many miles and don't want to waste that one. Will make on it even if I need to change the gearbox but that isn't the point. Really want a 2011 or later L322 for my collection lol.
Just taxed this one this morning before I left the house. Now need to Tax another one so I can get around. Grrrr Current cars

No difference in the lever at all.

What gearbox is in it? Is it the same as a D3? Current cars

Spot on thanks. Changed the gear oil and the filter this afternoon and it is running much smoother. The other thing I have noticed is an improvement in the MPG. Current cars

Nice one Simon, really pleased for you that you managed to get it sorted. Just keep an eye on it and of you do decide to keep it for a while longer remember to do a second fluid and filter change in another 5k or so.

Know what you mean Simon, back in the summer we had an L322, Disco 4, Audi Q3, Lancia Fulvia coupe, and (Of all things), a Dodge Viper......(long story).
L322, Audi, and Viper (Thankfully) have all now gone. Disco 4 is bloody brilliant and I'm not selling my Lancia!

2 Discovery 2's that I am breaking and one I am going to sell
2 Discovery 3's
2 Range Rover Sports
1 Classic Range Rover with I have owned for 20 years and now needs a major restoration
1 P38 Range Rover
and finally
1 Range Rover L322
The classic and the P38 are unlikely to be sold the L322 I want to replace with one of the latter models, I want a D3 or 4 for a general workhorse and Possibly a TDV8 RR sport for weekends lol Current cars

Wow, that's a lot of iron! Nice collection. I'm really please with the D4 and did toy with replacing the L322 with a very late 4.4, but the Mrs was always shy of driving the old one and the amount of long distance trips we do (Did!) meant the extra economy from the D4 was a factor.
Had a Disco 1 V8 3.9 which I played around with; cleaned up the heads, put a stump puller cam in, K&N inlet and a freer breathing exhaust. Set of poly bushes and slightly stiffer springs and new shocks. Never intended to do serious off roading in it, just a bit of fun here and there, but the mods absolutely transformed it on the road and surprised one or two people. This classic RR of yours, seems to me you have a blank canvas there..........

The classic is a CSK so only a resto on that. One of the D2's I am breaking I put a Galvanised chassis on and made it into a very capable car. Tow bars front and back with receivers to take a removable winch and power outlets front and back. Very capable but never used it off road. It was very useful tho and want a D3 or 4 for the same purpose. The D2 that is being sold is a 3.9v8 Auto and a very nice car with only 92k on it.
I bought a Sport just to try it, liked it and then wanted the TDV8 so now have one that has suspension issues that I need to fix.
My problem is I love them all and just keep buying and playing. Current cars

That's the trouble isn't it? There are so many readily available parts to either keep standard or modify, it's easy to keep buying projects to play around with. Like the idea of a petrol 110 to fiddle with but they hold their value so well even a rusty old heap can be £10k. Will get one sooner or later though. A V8 preferably but a 2.25 if not as the 2.6 is so hard to extract much power from (You can actually get more from a 2.25 of you take it out to 2.5), and the 2.6's have a serious drink problem. All good fun though, and good luck with your projects.
