It does seem as if the crankpully is a damper pully.The wobble is only at idle.As soon as the revs is 1500-2000 it runs smoothly.I think the damper is on its way out and will need to be replaced soon.Def not a DIY job!! 2012 TDV8 Vogue SE 4.4

And is the proper name for the belt a serpentine belt?

I was trying to book my FFRR in for belt and tensioner change yesterday, and the lady dealing with the bookings in Basingstoke told me the only tensioner was on the timing chain.

She is obviously incorrect.

The belt is generally called the Auxilliary drive belt, but serpentine belt is another common name.

Hi,
adding this here as this seems to be the go-to thread for tensioner / belt replacement.

I'm replacing my belt and pulleys as the belt came off this week.
A couple of things that might be helpful to others.

- removing the airboxes is necessary, but not the upright plastic air tubes, they just need unbolting so they can be pushed out the way.
- it is easier to get the tensioner bolts out / in (especially the top left one) if you remove the top right pulley first. You can then clearly see them and get a hold of them (less risk of dropping them).
- it is possible to change the belt without having to remove the fan / cowling, and no need to drain down the cooling system, but you need a bit of patience.

In order to replace the belt with fan / cowling in place you need to:
- unplug the fan connector, unclip it from the housing, and feed it out of its location into the fan blades, gently pulling it through them a bit.
- You can then pass the old belt over the fan between the blade and the housing, which will also be in front of the cable too now. Getting the new belt in the same way.
- It is necessary to remove one bolt on the aluminium coolant tube located behind the fan, bolted to the front of the engine. This is necessary regardless of how you do it. Its an 8mm bolt, and a nightmare to get to with the fan in place, but doable. You are likely to drop this bolt, so stick a nail or something to the head of it once loose to make it easier to get a hold of (don't use too much glue as you will need to remove it later). Put a bit of card up the front of the engine from below to help guide it out when you do drop it, saves trying to find where it went multiple times.
You then lever the bracket forward a bit to get the belt between the bracket and engine.
Use the nail/whatever attached to the bolt to help you get it back in and the threads started. Then you can pull it off so you can tighten it up with a socket / spanner.

i hit some deep water the other night now i have a squeaky engine sounds to me like a belt pully is probably the guilty party. so if i am going to change one part i think i will order up belts pully's and tensioner do the lot in one hit.
anything anyone thinks i need to know?

i have ordered x2 belts x1 tensioner and x4 Idlers pulley's after inspection i can see part of the main belt is missing (So can only presume this job has never been done!) so at 114k miles i will do the lot and hope never to have to do them again in my ownership.
as there is currently no "How to " for this complete job i will try to document and post.
look like a real pain to do but the dealer i got the car from has agreed to go halves on parts (As i want to do all the Pulley's ) and supply the labour (I will play apprentice) parts list is

Good luck. About to do mine. Thinking of changing the water pump at the same time so I know ALL the bearings are good then. Did you go for genuine parts?

No not all genuine i went for a OEM part for tensioner from Rimmer Bros as it is a big saving and has 2 year warranty and the last pully i got from Advanced Factors as it was £96 on Rimmers but £36 from AF for the same part no (Original)
some are Genuine as there was not a pattern part to replace.

If you go all genuine i think it was nearly £400 for the parts, i paid £260 i think.

I have used pattern parts before from Rimmer on my last RR and had no complaints quality was there and never regretted the decision. I know there will be folk on here who do not agree and some times you get what you pay for!! for example the tensioner is £136 for original But £55 for a pattern part. another saving was on the belts Original £44 for primary a Drayco £18 i have used Drayco before and they good never had an issue with them.

Thanks for your reply mate. I might go for a genuine tensioner and pattern for the rest then.

After Kevinp's comment i have decided to change the water pump as well.
As there is so much to be done coupled with the fact i am not all that tall + have big fat fore arms and hands i am going to strip the front end lights, bumper, crash bar pop hose off the rad (Need and coolant service anyhow + changing the water pump) looks like i can swing all to one side and get access to everything i need without discharging the AC.

Will document and take pics as we go.
