United Kingdom 2011 Range Rover Autobiography TDV8 Baltic Blue

Bearing in mind I do not know what work the original owner had done before I took the vehicle over at 327,662 miles (e.g. engine / gearbox rebuild?) I had not thought about a target mileage.

But I want this car to last until the whole PHEV, HEV, EV choice becomes a lot clear, so a good few years yet! My annual mileage is normally about 4-5k in my car and about 7-9k per year on my motorbikes. However at present I am not able to ride a bike due to health reasons so this years car mileage will be a bit higher.

I was talking to a friend of mine earlier and mileage on Range Rover's came up and I mentioned your car as I recalled seeing it on eBay.

Is it still performing well after you had your teething issues sorted?

Hi Dhallworth, you asked about my L322 "is it still performing well after you had your teething issues sorted?".

Well I think so, but due to the lock-down I have not been out in it since 24th March. Big Cry

Quick update.

Last week "Big Blue" went in for it's annual service and MoT and it cost a pretty penny! Big Cry

Well actually, £4.8k including; four new tyres, rear shocks, new brake lines etc. etc. But at least it has a new MoT without any advisories. Thumbs Up

Current mileage is 333,093 so perhaps I will be able to get to the "magic" 333,333 mark this year if the lock down rules allow. Mr. Green 2010 Range Rover TDV8 Baltic Blue Autobiography (2011 MY) - SOLD Sad

Thats dedication and certainly a fair bill, was the rear shocks and brake lines the major of the jobs or were there other large jobs to bring the bill up.

Replacing all the metal brake pipes (flexibles done last year) was the fat end of £1k as were the four tyres (with alignment), shocks £890, front discs/pads £710 it soon mounts up alright!

To be fair the; front disc/pads, rear shocks and two of the tyres could have waited a bit but would have gone down as advisories on this year's MoT.

Interestingly the 2018 MoT had an advisory on the rear shocks "oil misting" but the July 2019 MoT (just before I purchased) was clean with no advisories. I guess they wiped the oil off the shocks before putting it in for it's pre-sale MoT. Whistle

Certainly does add up.
I would hope such a large capacity engine and with how lazy these are until pushed should manage very high milage if maintained correctly with frequent oil and filter changes.
As for the zf8 box research does show they are the best out of the bunch out of curiosity have you any record of a oil and filter change for it.

I did not get any service paperwork with the car other than a fully stamped service book (all from JLR main dealerships). So I can only assume the gearbox oil changes have been done as recommended by JLR.

I had a JLR main dealer service the car the month after I got it (Oct 2019) and again last week when the MoT was due. I know that's a bit more than 12 months between services but the mileage covered was under 5,500, so it should not matter that much.

Unless there is another MoT extension for Covid, the service and MoTs are now in sync. Fingers crossed I get some use out of my "investment" in all the service and repair works! 2010 Range Rover TDV8 Baltic Blue Autobiography (2011 MY) - SOLD Sad

A Trap 

I would have challenged the advisor on ‘shock oil misted’, this is quite normal, a failure is either failing the bounce check or oil dripping... I hate MOT testers thinking outside the manual... the manual has been written and revised over decades to detail exactly how to test each component, what is a failure, what is an advisory or what is a pass, there is no grey area, no making it up, no ‘being helpful’, no ‘being safe’..... it’s either in the manual as a pass, failure, or advisory, if not it doesn’t go on the official paperwork... if they want to comment on the invoice to be ‘helpful’ that’s fine but not on the system.

As a customer, I have asked in the past for the MOT tester to show me the exact passage in the manual they are following for a ‘failure’ or ‘advisory’... if they can’t, they have to remove the ‘advisory’ or issue a pass, again no grey area... I have also been challenged in the past on why I pass, failed or ‘advised’, so what always did was either refer direct to the manual or to save the work flow make notes on what I observed during the test then when completing the test paperwork refer each note to the manual for guidance on what I could or couldn’t do or say... there are very few grey areas and as much effort is put into the manual on not failing things that should pass as those that should fail or be an advisory.

The trouble is most MOT testers have the wrong mind set, they do servicing and MOT’s so they will look at something and say that’s unsafe or may fail in a few weeks etc... but an MOT is a check at a specific point in time, if it was OK to pass in the manual but you think it may fail in an hour, day, week, month etc, as long as the manual doesn’t guide you differently then it’s a pass, may be an advisory if the manual says or it’s just a pass.

Customers get upset with MOT’s because they don’t understand this, they may be upset they just purchased a vehicle which passed an MOT and though it was fault free and ‘safe’, or they are upset because it failed but believe it should have been allowed a pass and they could sort it out ‘later’ etc. The general public don’t understand the test and the rationale behind it, it’s looked at as an annual pain in the butt or a certificate of overall safety and serviceability 🤦‍♂️

Took a trip up to Ellesmere Port yesterday to pick up a new "Triton" ST-125 Motorbike and passed the "magic" 333,333 mile point.

Just a thought; If you have the full service history, why not just call and ask them to send you history of all work carried out on the car?

All invoices for parts and labour would be there...

You would have thought wouldn't you? But no, JLR Reading do not have the details on their system.

As you will see at the start of this thread, I purchased this car after seeing it reviewed in Land Rover Monthly. They called the dealership that sold and serviced the car until I got it. But were told they could not release any info on the servicing due to GDPR. A load of rubbish (I know because GDPR compliance was part of my job!) but that is what they told the Journalist.

I intended to drive over to them to see what I could find out, but by the time my chemotherapy finished early 2020, Covid 19 restriction put a stop to that plan! Shocked
