only put gasket sealer on the half moons and on the front ridges as identified in RAVE

BMW actually suggest silicon lube on the rocker lips to make the gasket float and seat better. Don't think I would do that, but I would suggest using the elastic band trick (mentioned in this thread) to hold the gasket to th cover when fitting

buy OEM - its a bad enough job that you only want to do it once
fit all new gaskets and rubber washers

Great write up on this 👍👍, i did mine today after months waiting for some good weather but ........what a pig of a job to do the drivers side 😠.
The rubber gaskets where as hard as plastic and the washers too.
Now just hoping it doesn't leak oil any more 😆. If it dont work.......burn it!

If the IId tool cant fix it.......burn the FF.

If the FF cant be fixed......buy a Land Cruiser!

If the LC cant be fixed..............................................BUY a horse !!

I am new to this forum and the range rover so I have no idea but as regards to the rubber gasket falling out as you try to fit the cover, when building Detroit Diesels we had the same problem, to solve this we super glued a few spot around the cover to hold it in place.
This was common practice.
I like the idea of silicon grease on the head surface as esraceboy says

I went to do the driver first as it has less gas around it...

Coming off was fine, going back on how do you check the top semi circle is in? I could feel the bottom - I’ve had to guess and start it and couldn’t see any leakage...

Two... those rubber washers!!! Should they be very tight? As in I had to push it together in a vice? I’m wondering if they had been sat on the shelf for a while and gone hard? I ended up for the dipstick ones reusing the old with some silicone and washers there was no other way I could get them on...

Those washers took over an hour of messing so only got one bank done today... gas on the other side so didn’t want to start

Sometimes you wonder if anything is really easy on the range rover.

I decided to order everything I needed last week and started tackling the job yesterday. It has been a pain in the posterior getting the drivers side cover off - it took a lot of swearing to get it past the dipstick tube, injector cover and A/C pipes and I'm still not sure how it came out, but it did.

My next concern is getting it back in with the new gasket in place, but I'm going to look at the elastic band trick if I need to.

It is obvious however that the gaskets have never been changed - they literally all chipped off in lumps and almost none of it was rubbery like the new one - even the bolt washers were hard. Theres a lot of oil in the plug holes which I've cleaned up too, so fingers crossed this is going to make a real difference.

I put a very small bead of rtv in the channel the gaskets sits in to keep it in place, never had an issue doing it this way.

Thats another job off the list.

I eventually used the elastic band method on both banks, but on the passenger side I kept catching the gasket on something so it fell out of place near its destination. fortunately though on that side you can lift the cover sufficiently away to reseat the gaskets and drive it home easily. I then used a small inspection camera to ensure the gasket was seated correctly all the way around (or as much as I could see) and luckily no more leaks and no more smells. The old one was really brittle and oil was in the spark plug holes quite a bit on the passenger side.
