Tdv8 transmission problem

Hi,
I have a 09 tdv8 and am experiencing a delay when changing from 2nd to 3rd. All other gear changes seem fine. Any ideas? Thanks.

Start with a gearbox oil and filter change, that tends to cure quite a few gearbox maladies. The problem is LR well tell you the box is sealed for life. This is complete nonsense as the service interval for a gearbox oil change is actually 50k. So if your car has done more than that (Which given the age I would imagine so), even if it doesn't cure this particular issue will help prolong gearbox life.

Not sure if it will fix the issue, but i am fully supportive of that ^^ and I agree that the idea of gear box oil for life is a non-sense. When I challenged a previous manufacturer (Porsche) about this, they justified it by saying the expected life of the car was 100,000 miles. There are not many Porsches that cease to exist at 100,000 miles.

"Oil for life": What a non-sense, and a dangerously misleading one too.

Thanks for your input. I should have included in my post that I had the transmission fluid and filter changed about 6k ago. Hope it was done properly!

Just curious, does it behave the same if you use the sport mode? I.e. when changing from 2nd to 3rd using the stick does it hesitate then? I'm not sure what this will tell us, but if it works OK in sport, then I might start to wonder if it is a software issue rather than a mechanical one. If I thought it was a software related issue, I might consider trying the gearbox in re-learn mode. I think it has a learn mode, but am not 100% sure.

Yes it’s the same using the manual change.

Mm. I had a little look around for "L322 slow to select gear". There is quite a bit out there to read up if you haven't already.

Some people talk about the gear box fluid filter coming lose, worn selectors, damaged bridge seals, others talk of transmission fluid temp, and some about a rebuild of the gear box. They all look like they will require investigation, work and spanners. And that was all in the space of a few minutes.

With that in mind, I think I would try a reset and see if putting the box back into learn mode helps. How would I do it? Probably shorting the battery connectors whilst NOT connected to the battery. Read up before attempting this, as there are a few warnings and gotchas. Plus doing it wrong might be fatal. Its not hard to do it correctly, no harder than brushing one's teeth, but just don't do it wrong and be confident that there is no risk to vehicle or self Smile I accept no liability for this advice Smile

If that did not work, I would take a trip to a trusted and technical L322 specialist.

hi,
I would change oil, filter and mechatronik bridge seal (this could be the cause of delay).
If you want to save a little bit, you can go with ravennol or liqui moly 1800, this two are good replacement for original zf 6hp26 oil. For the filter go with the top oem brands. RR HSE 4.4 2006 LPG

First thing to do would be to make sure there's no oil leaks as there's a sleeve the electrical connector locates in that can leak oil. I'd also check the oil level in the box to make sure that it's definitely right. Also, read the codes from the gearbox ECU - there might be none there but it might have something logged that'll point you in one direction or another. Start with the simple things. Smile

There are rubber seals above the valve body in the 6 speed. There are 4 that look like little dowels and then there's the bridge seal too. These can cause shift issues but I'm not sure if it's a harsh shift or a delayed shift.

The 6HP26 box was used in a huge number of vehicles so try searching for things like "6HP26 slow to change gear" rather then just Range Rover.

Here's the bridge seal:

Here's the sleeve that can leak on the electrical connection:

Here's the 4 little rubber dowels in the plastic bag:

Not sure if it helps but I had them to hand Smile
