Flattery will get you anywhere it seems

I’m sure this is not new news to most on here but I was amazed at how competent my L322 was off-road this morning. A friend of mine runs a 4x4 off-roading school and he offered to teach me the basics in local private woodlands. Suffice to say that it’s ability flatters the driver. Low range, raise suspension, select mud&ruts and voila, instant off-road competence Laughing
Next stop some AT3s and a few green-lane sessions Thumbs Up 2011 TDV8 4.4 Vogue SE in Galway Green with Black leather

Go on a JLR experience day... Simply astonishing what the 322 & now 405 will do off-road! Even on-road tyres!

I take mine out green laning when I get chance, and yes it is amazing what these vehicles can do. I believe they should be used for what they where originally built for and to there full potential. Get yourself some decent tyres like AT3’s and away you go.

They are pretty good...

This is the problem with them though... too fat for lanes carved out by Defenders and Disco's...

At 4.00 it fell into the wall...!!

Jeez! I'd have a word with the council about that track! It's almost as bad as parts of the M6 round Birmingham Rolling with laughter
Not sure I'm brave enough to try those sorts of track yet though, a bit too hard core for me. 2011 TDV8 4.4 Vogue SE in Galway Green with Black leather

They're also too fat to fit between the walls on many "Green" lanes up in Derbyshire - lol.

We have a video in our Club where 1 of our members was in a L322 in a Green laning group with a few Defenders & D2s & all you can hear from inside the car is paintwork being scratched - it was horrific the damage it did to his already non adhering clear coat.

You need an advance party to check out many lanes before you'd dare take an L322 (or D3/ D4 or Ewok) down them. Paul,

I might bump the S/C up a kerb now and again but that's as far off road as it's going, although with the locking rear diff it would be better than Fatty off roader..!!

Fatty off roader was modified after testing off road and finding it's week points... the, later fitted, side bars would have prevented the damage caused in the second vid.... you don't know what they need till you use them... Thumbs Up Pete

This is as brave as I got. The dark trench on the downward side of the hump was dug by my (not so) removable tow bar as I drove up the other side of the ditch the first time around. The purpose of this exercise was to get the axles crossed up with diagonally opposing wheels in free air. It worked too!

Having tried several options I prefer to drive the car with it locked in first for the downhill parts and use the engine braking more than just relying on the HDC, which works really well but relies on the car having to react to what's happening rather than not letting it happen in the first place. This is based on very limited experience obviously Smile 2011 TDV8 4.4 Vogue SE in Galway Green with Black leather

You can descend as you describe until the gradient gets too steep and the speed of the car overtakes the speed of the wheels, then you are sliding downhill with no traction...

HDC is superb at adjusting the speed to the slowest possible whilst going fast enough to keep control...

You can't control the speed yourself to the degree that HDC can...

Try it on a much steeper incline and you will be amazed....

It is also invaluable when climbing a steep slope, if you don't make it, a quick change to reverse as you come to a standstill, then off the brakes and let the car be controlled whilst reversing down the slope...

I think the slopes you were trying it on were too flat...

You can control your speed in HDC with the cruise buttons but ultimately the system picks the best speed... Thumbs Up Pete

Those are the exact same comments that my friendly instructor made about the subject Thumbs Up
The slopes weren't exactly flat but clearly they weren't much of a challenge either. 2011 TDV8 4.4 Vogue SE in Galway Green with Black leather

LOL that reminds me when I had my experience day. I thought he was crazy when he told me to go back down in reverse after I just climbed up. But still found it not as impressive as how it dealt with just long wet grass.

I managed to do all the rest in my old previous mechanical cars; mainly army version of the G wagon. But accelerating that hard on wet grass wasn’t one of them 🤣
