Did a fun little mod to my 2011 Supercharged with Rear Seat Entertainment.

Gathered the following information about how the DVD player sends video to the Nav screen:

There's an S-Video style connector at the top of the RSE box which is easily accessible and disconnected without removing anything besides the access panel. Four pin style male cable runs directly up to the Nav screen. Some people who did not have this cable installed from the factory have made their own and routed it to the front. The pinout is as follows:

- Pin 1 is a TV tuner composite INPUT; (Not available in USA)
- Pin 2 is the ground for the TV tuner input; (Not available in USA)
- Pin 3 is the DVD composite output to the front touch screen display;
- Pin 4 is the ground for the DVD output to the front TSD.

I made myself an adapter out of an old S-Video cable which connects Pin 3 to the outer ring of a standard composite jack and Pin 4 to the inner pin. The S-Video cable has two coaxial wires, in my case Red and White. The inner wire of the white coaxial line ended up being Pin 3 and the inner wire of the Red coaxial line was Pin 4. This is easy enough to test before making permanent connections.

I then got a little Walmart power inverter which plugs into the 12v in the trunk and reaches far enough so the unit itself is in the spare tire well. It has two USB ports and an AC outlet. Got an HDMI to RCA audio video converter which runs off 5v USB and used an old Chromecast which powers off the other USB. An RCA Y splitter. RCA audio to 3.5mm aux chord and another headphone jack splitter.

The S-video adapter cable plugs into the factory Rover end with a double female piece and routes into the spare tire well where everything is hidden. The Composite video from the HDMI adapter splits to that adapter and one of the AV inputs in the center console under the seats and carpet along with a 3.5mm audio cable which goes into the AUX input through a splitter so I still have my bluetooth audio unit, which sits in the glove box, plugged in the other end at all times.

Now I can have my phone connected to the car via bluetooth for phone calls, the bluetooth audio unit for playing music or whatever, and when I want... I create a wifi hotspot on the phone which the chromecast is setup to connect to. From there any other phone (or I have an old android tablet) connected to the wifi network can cast YouTube, Netflix, Screen Mirror or whatever and it can be watched on both rear screens through the AV input and the Nav screen through the diagnostic menu with audio still coming from the Aux input.

The only thing I lost is the ability to actually watch a DVD on the front screen but the chromecast is much more useful and all I would have to do to get that back is plug the S-Video cable back in to the RSE unit.

My friends and I have had a good time watching live sports and YouTube videos on long weekend drives. I employed my brother to drive on a little wine tour we did recently and I sat in the back seat (fully reclined) watching wine making documentaries on the way home after having a few myself.

Hopefully that's concise enough for someone to find a solution which suites their own needs.

Best hack I've seen to the relatively unhackable 2009-2012 system.

I'd love to do this but I don't have RSE. Even on just the head unit in my case, would be useful.

Anyone know if the inputs may still be there somewhere (and how to unhide the menu)?

The input exists on the back of the Nav system. I've read about people installing the very cable I tapped into in situations where they didn't have one. The input is a "Fakra" style connector which you could adapt to composite video.

Think I have had a breakthrough with this.
I think I have found a way it can all be connected and fitted in the rear by the dvd changer.

I am waiting on an s video cable to be delivered, we know we can get video signal same as above.
Have got audio working in the rear. 5-1 assuming chromecast supports that.
Also retains dvd changer but only way I can see it working best is by swapping plug between chromecast and dvd when needed.

Will reveal all tomorrow.

Oooo exciting.... I am always limited as I only have a 2 or 4GB data limit on my mobile phone 🤣

In basic principle it uses audio that would be from the DVD Changer and video using the method above.
I don't know until I test whether the TV will work whilst the chromecast is plugged in.
But the rear seat passengers will have the correct audio through headphones aswell as audio and video from the front.

Struggling with this.
Seems the poster above had US spec and UK is different.
I can get it to play on the rear screens but nothing on the front.
Cannot use tv feed as audio is from DVD.

Will keep on having a go at various options.

Spent a few hours on this over past 2 days.

So I now have RSE working. Audio also works through headphones.

I have it working on front screen. However the quality isn't great.
I have ordered another unit to try.

I was hoping to be able to either provide a kit or a guide and parts list for anyone wanting. But unless I can get the plugs and sockets it is not an easy process.

All done and working.

Involves cutting into the shielded cables

If I could get the correct connectors and sockets I could put an almost plug and play kit together.

TV and DVD still function for RSE.
I have fitted a switch to enable TV/DVD back on front screen.
