£750 for a spare key.. would you?

So.. bought my Rangie a month ago and it only came with one key.. works fine. Land Rover quotes me £200 for a spare key and £150 to program and sync it to the car. I’m thinking I need a spare key and syncing looks complicated so I’ll pay the money and get it done right. Dropped it off today and LR rang me up to say that they couldn’t sync the new key and I needed a new key module at a cost of £400!!!!!!.. so I told them to jog on as I wasn’t going to pay £750 for a spare key.. they seemed surprised Censored Anyone know of a way round this?? Not sure I understand how the current key works fine but the in car key module won’t work with the new spare??!! 2010 RR 4.4tdV8 Autobiography

Just checked on the IID website and it states that some of the KVM modules on the 2010+ models are locked, seems that the IID tool can't add the new key if they are, however, you can send the module to Pat and he can program it. Maybe someone with SSD access could do the same thing if there is someone local to you 2011 TDV8 Vogue SE

Ooo ok thanks.. you are kind of implying that the key module can be unlocked using software rather than the module being faulty as per LR position.. is that correct.. gives me hope.. Very Happy 2010 RR 4.4tdV8 Autobiography

What's he charge roughly for a spare key too be made. I've got the dodgy old BMW style key so it's well past its expiry date

If the KVM is locked it is normally set to a specific number of keys in the address list. I suspect that it is possible to remove one of the existing keys in order to add another rather than unlock it as such. 2011 TDV8 Vogue SE

I used a chap in Huddersfield called P.D Auto Locksmith, probably no good for you due to location but he removed the KVM and re-flashed it with a new key, he also removed the old lost one from the system . Charged £200. There must be someone in your location who can do the same.

As above - there are people that can do it.

The change that JLR made was that you could no longer do it simply & quickly through the ODB port which makes loads of sense. That's ho cars were getting stolen - a booster relay from the key to allow keyless entry, then plug into the ODB port & add a new key & drive away.

You can pick up spare keys off eBay - they won't have the right blade should you ever need access to a physical lock - but if you've paying for the module coding, may as well add a third key....

You should be able to find some locksmith who can make a spare key for you. Not all have the means or knowledge to do it. I have the old BMW style and still had to enquire at several places before finding the one.
The process is not entirely straightforward as the immobilizer module has to come off and be connected to a computer for reprogramming or whatever it is they do with it...
Stealers, quoted € 500-550 on prepayment terms and without the ability to upgrade to something better than the BMW style key. Plus at least 2 months wait due to... Brexit Shocked and with a risk of coming with a wrongly cut blade!!!! Yes, they've seen that, too Banging Head So, to their credit, they effectively tried to talk me out of this endeavor and point me towards a locksmith.
I finally got a very beautiful and fully functional spare key in 45 minutes and for only €120!!!

The KVM's can still be programmed, you just need a man in a van that has the right tools. I had a new key added and the missing keys removed on the drive for £200. Current
