Long term admirer, first time purchaser

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum but been an active reader for some time. Been thinking about a Range Rover for at least 12 months now and hoping to bite the bullet by autumn.

I do less than 5k miles a year, so in theory a petrol would suit me but they seem quite rare and more expensive than diesels.

Looking at a 2010-2012 TDV8 4.4, with a budget of around 12-15k. Preferably no more than 100k miles.

Spotted this, which seems good value - https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/2...on=at_cars

Any thoughts please?

Have prices increased much in the last few months? Haven't been tracking prices so hard to gauge.

Thanks

Welcome.

Nice colour combo. Non factory wheels, looks tidy. I know prices are strong currently, and I don’t think the price is too high.

I don’t do many miles in mine, in fact I think it had 83k on it when I bought it ar the start of 2016 and it’s still only on 95k. Just give it a regular blast after getting it warm.

Cracking motors. Other than one of my M5’s it’s the longest I’ve kept a car.

Still love it.

Looks tidy. Not sure what’s going on with the wheels though, I’d enquire if there was a reason why it wasn’t sporting the originals. Plenty of original L322 wheels on eBay and they come up here too for not much money so don’t let that put you off.

I’m kind of not feeling it. The wheels are absurd to my eyes. I wonder if going for a slightly older vehicle at the same price might result in a more authentic and satisfying experience. But specific to the ad, there’s not enough details to form a full opinion, as I’d need to know number of owners and details of service history just for starters.

In terms of general car choice… I think your objective is fantastic and will result in some very happy motoring indeed. Thumbs Up L405 P400e Autobiography (MY2020)... Silicon Silver / Espresso

With a predicted mileage of less than 5K a year I would avoid a 4.4 tdv8 with its DPF. The DPF won’t thank you for lots of short journeys. If you’re just doing long journeys then fine Thumbs Up
If you really want a diesel then go for a 3.6 in 2010. No DPF and you get the updated digital dash 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

I ran a 3.0 TDV6 RRS for 9 years from new doing 37k miles and I only got a DPF amber warning maybe twice and it regened fine. I did need the turbo actuator replacing in year four. After that I switched to premium diesel and then later in its life I started using Archoil diesel additive. It ran so sweetly. So you can run a diesel on low milage but take precautions, I would say, to minimise the risk of issues. Taking it for a good blast every couple of weeks is also recommended! L405 P400e Autobiography (MY2020)... Silicon Silver / Espresso

Thanks all.

I quite like the alloys and would keep them.

I've just sent an email asking about previous owners and service history details.

Will keep you updated.

I like the wheels but I would check that they have the correct load rating, many aftermarket wheels don't. I think they should be at least 940kg per wheel.

Interested to see the comments particularly about the 3.6 over 4.4 for shorter mileages/journeys.

I'm also looking for one and the value thing is a bit confusing at the moment. At the upper end with the dealers there are a lot of good Vogues that are not moving or at least very slowly. Most of what I've been looking at over the last month are still for sale. One fairly knowledgeable dealer claimed that the prices have risen by about ten or fifteen percent over the last year and that may have been the case but it's strange times and now as things seem to be normalising I sense there is a return to previous levels. I have been looking for a 4.4 with around 60k and it's notable that nearly all those that have sold that I'm aware of have sold for about £20k or a bit less. Most dealers however are asking a lot more and there are lots that now overlap on the early 405's with similar mileages.

I think your budget of £12-15k is healthy for one around 100k miles but it's finding a good one! Good luck and there is no doubt the perfect 322 is out there for you.

Thats an interesting thread.. Was looking at a 3.6 but recently been put off after hearing about potential turbo issues with them. Therefore was thinking of increasing budget and going for a 4.4. However, im only doing 12 miles in each direction every day for work. Would you therefore suggest the 3.6 is better for that kind of commuting? (24 miles a day)

Cheers!

Unless the 12 miles includes a fast road that gets the engine up to temp and exercises the turbos, you might want to look at a petrol! The MPG in my 3.6 drops to very low 20s if just knocking around in short trips like that.

3.6 better…..? Not in my mind…. I’ve done 2500 miles in 2 years in my 4.4. No issues, just make sure you give it a good blast out and the odd longer run for the DPF to regenerate.

I’ve tempted fate now 🤣🤣

How has your 4.4 been over the last few years? What you suggest are the main issues I should look out for when buying / maintaining?

Many thanks! G
