Throttle body problem..

My previously ultra reliable 2002 L322 petrol V8 has decided it's time to show who's boss.

Start it up and it won't idle or rev and engine limp mode shows up on the dash.

Plugged in the iid and it's showing a "Throttle adaptation, spring test failed"

I've bought a used throttle body, waiting for delivery.

If i fit it will any adaptations need to be "reset", or is it just fit and go ? (assuming the throttle body is the problem)

Many thanks.

workshop manual does say reset adaptations after new part has been fitted.
do you have the ability to do this?

The only diagnostic equipment i have is an IID tool.

Not use if that's capable of resetting adaptations.

Replaced throttle body but it's made no difference.

Assuming you cleared the fault codes with your iid?

You say the car won’t idle or rev. What does it actually do? Starts ok just won’t idle steadily and hunts around? Or something else?

It starts, runs rough, idle fluctuates between 1500 and 200 revs and doesn't respond to any throttle input.

Cleared all faults.

If i unplug the maf sensor, then with the ignition on and engine not running i clear all faults it then starts and runs fine. If i then turn the engine off and restart it it runs as per original fault
If i clear the faults with the engine running rough it makes no difference.

There are plenty of the same identical fault on various forums, but with no definite remedy.

here's a screen shot of the fault the iid recorded.

Have you had a look at the MaF sensor? Is it filthy?
ive seen lots of other posts about air leak post MAF which affect the engine running with MAF plugged in.
when MAF is unplugged the ECM defaults to using engine speed and throttle postiion. as yours runs OK that suggests your throttle position sensor and the throttle itself are OK.

from the manual: -
"If the air flow signal fails the ECM adopts a default value for air flow volume based on throttle position and engine
speed. The following engine symptoms will be noticeable:
l The engine speed might 'dip' before the default strategy enables continued running
l The engine may be difficult to start and prone to stalling
l The overall performance of the engine will be adversely affected (throttle response in particular)
l Exhaust emissions will be out of tolerance, because the air/fuel ratio value is now assumed, not calculated; no
closed loop fuelling
l Idle speed control disabled, leading to rough idle and possible engine stall.
At the time of failure, the ECM will store details of the engine speed, coolant temperature and throttle angle.
If the intake air temperature signal fails, the ECM adopts a default value of 45 °C. This default value is then used within
all the calculations involving intake air temperature. The effect on the vehicle of a failed air temperature signal will not
be so noticeable to the driver, who may notice a reduction in engine performance when operating the vehicle at high
altitudes or in hot ambient temperatures. The occurrence of this fault will also disable fuelling adaptions.
The ECM will store details of the engine speed, engine load and battery voltage when this fault is first detected."

I know this thread is from a while ago, but Steptoe - did you get to the bottom of this and if so, what was it?

I have exactly the same fault.

The problem just disappeared. I bought a used throttle body/TPS and fitted it but it made no difference.

Went to start work going "deeper" to see if i could find the problem, but before i even lifted the bonnet it went back to running perfectly and the problem has never returned.
