Except for hgv drivers they are scrapping the reverse exercise and the coupling a trailer.

Might be akward when a trailer falls off the back of a unit on the m6 and crashes into someone or a new driver reverses the trailer into someone's car

Just found out about this, my 28 year old, sensible daughter, had just booked trailer lessons, now cancelled, will save her a ton of money.
At the yard we go to, it's not the youngsters that have trouble, daughter and I have both had to get into other peoples vehicles to reverse their trailers for them, some of their driving skills make you wonder.

My daughter got called out to help after one women 'lost' a horse box trailer on a slip road joining a motorway, let's just say what she saw was not nice, trailer coupling should be mandatory.

I suspect all the car trailer tests have just been cancelled by everyone now they are getting it back for free but I also suspect plenty of people will forget the breakaway cable, security and not doing left/right or right/left adjustments.

Be the same for hgv drivers mate. Done away with connecting a trailer.

Should be a laugh tho when everyone starts messing up and costing the insurance companies a few quid

Although this is never going too happen but now you could get a 21 year old walk into a firm that does movement orders only and be given the keys too something like this

And this could very easily separate if they don't know what they are doing. 150 tonnes will very easily destroy anything in its path

I wonder how many will know about the law of towing in the fast lane on the motorway its not even in the highway code.

I’m not a towist….. but what’s the left/right right/left adjustment? I remember correct hitching… locking on, security cable and stabiliser bars from when my Grandad towed in 70s and 80s… but not that bit….

Perhaps you should have a read.....

Rule 265
The right-hand lane of a motorway with three or more lanes MUST NOT be used (except in prescribed circumstances) if you are driving

any vehicle drawing a trailer

a goods vehicle with a maximum laden weight exceeding 3.5
tonnes but not exceeding 7.5 tonnes, which is required to be fitted
with a speed limiter

a goods vehicle with a maximum laden weight exceeding 7.5
tonnes BMW i3 Electric Car

I think that is probably a sensible move. There are lots of young families out there who want to tow a small van or camping trailer who can’t afford the test, but would be perfectly capable. It worked well enough for those of us with grandfather rules on our licenses for years…..

I know vans are bigger now, but really they make you do the test with a small box trailer on, which is no representation of towing a 20’ caravan….. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

If it was a family with a small trailer, no test was needed anyway you could tow:-

a car or van up to 3,500kg MAM towing a trailer of up to 750kg MAM (up to 4,250kg in total)

a trailer over 750kg MAM, as long as it is no more than the unladen weight of the towing vehicle (up to 3,500kg in total)

The small trailer is in many ways much harder than a 20' caravan, just try reversing a small trailer! The 20' caravan only becomes more significant at junctions the tail swing and the track of the wheels. BMW i3 Electric Car
