Another day another problem, this one may be terminal,

Drove off this morning after yesterday's work done on the suspension, travelled about half mile and gbox lost forwards momentum car revs increased but gbox just made a bit more noise than usual, after a couple of stop starts things were usable but still not right, car kept losing fwd and now rear movement, couldn't change up mote than 3 gears in sport, when putting it in park it doesn't engage properly and your hear interference.

Currently stuck at road sode hoping that when it cools may be able to make it home

Rescue on its, way, can I be towed if so what do I need to do, they're bound to send me a tow truck rather than a flat bed truck

they did actually send the smallest flatbed available so panic averted , vehicle home on my drive now.

Just need some idea of what diagnostics I can carry out with an iid tool (help Phil )

zf gearbox specialists are few and far between here , there's 2 in lisbon about
100km from me but ideally would like to have an idea of whats gone kapuut before getting it trucked down there

When mine lost drive I thought it was the gearbox but it was actually the transfer box that was knackered.

Can you still change between high and low? First thing I'd do is check the fluid level in the gearbox.

Fingers crossed that it's something simple for you.

Im hoping rrphil can give me some pointers on some diagnosis using the iid tool before I decide what's going to be the way forward (no pun intended) so I've pinged him off a pm.

If the park lock won’t hold the car and you hear a grinding/ratcheting noise when you select park, then this means that the transmission output shaft is turning even though the vehicle is stationary. Therefore, the driveline is disconnected somewhere downstream of the transmission.

One possible cause is that the spline on the transmission output shaft has worn away through fretting corrosion, or it could be a transfer box fault, or an issue with the propshafts, final drives or driveshafts.

You can eliminate the propshafts/final drives/driveshafts by checking if either propshaft is rotating with the vehicle stationary and the engine running in Drive or Reverse. If neither propshaft is rotating then the issue is with the transfer box or the output spline.

thanks Phil , no codes on iid tool for gearbox but I think the issue has to do with my suspension strut change yesterday , I thought perhaps the gearbox linkage may have been the culprit but on getting under the car to have a looksee , noticed lots of grease on front drivers wheel and suspension geometry

see pic , boot is ok just wonder where the grease came from?

BUT looking at front drivers side drive shaft it doesnt appear to be sitting where it should with gap of about 10mm from where I think it should be and evidence of leaking fluid on the structure below.

I drove about 10km after the job yesterday , aprked over night and almost immediately got the gearbox issues flagging and covered another 15km or so , is it simply a case of removing the wheel and loosening the strut and reseating the drive shaft where it should be?

I thought the gearbox selector cable was the issue as after lubing it I could move up and down the drive, unfortunately only got 800m to the garage and have the same issue again

The right front ds is slightly more out of its housing in the diff, I'm hopeful that this is the issue and can be resolved by reseating the shaft.

its looking likely that whats happened is a nipped gaiter on cv joint and pulled ds from diff when manipulating out the air strut.

hopefully once they pull the ds replace boot and reengage ds into diff housing , all will be well again.

1Q for rrphil , could the ds not being fully engaged in the diff be the issue and not the spline fretting corrosion problem?

If it is a disengaged driveshaft causing the problem then, if you get someone to look (safely) underneath, you should be able to see the propshaft/driveshaft turning when the vehicle is stationary in Drive or Reverse.

With the old NV225 (Torsen) transfer box, if one driveshaft failed then the vehicle couldn’t move because the centre differential didn’t lock. However, with the Magna DD295 transfer box fitted to your vehicle, I wonder if the wheel speed sensors would interpret a failed driveshaft as a spinning wheel and apply the centre differential clutch to provide drive to the other axle? This clearly isn’t happening in your case, which may indicate the issue lies with the transmission output shaft or the transfer box.

On the other hand, because the wheel speed sensor gear is on the driveshaft, if the shaft has moved axially the sensor may no longer be lined up with the gear, in which case the sensor won’t detect that the shaft is spinning.

I think you should really try to take a look underneath while someone holds the vehicle stationary on the brake in Drive or Reverse.

Thanks for the reply

I did look under whilst the car was in drive with the handbrake on, no movement on prop shafts, but I seem to remember from reading somewhere that the system wouldn't read anything from the wheel speed sensor at each wheel until something in the order of 5mph. That might be another explanation of why no drive, its at the shop and waiting for a new gaiter to arrive, not long to find out what happens when the drive shaft is reseated. Hopefully I'll get an answer on Monday

Fixed, it was only the drive shaft issue, crisis averted its turned from one of the worst cars in the world to one of the best once again

I came to comment drive shaft - I had exactly the same a couple of years ago it hadn't been pushed all the way in so it fell out. Current stable:
