Buying from a dealer vs private - GDPR

It's been nearly 6 yrs since I bought a car so I've come up against quite a serious issue I had not faced before. Due to GDPR rules dealers are only showing basic service records (oil and filters) so anything that is pretty vital for higher mileage models such as egr valve / turbo replacement, gearbox services , suspension parts etc there is no record unless the dealer has done a tedious job of going through all the receipts and cutting off the personal data which mainly they don't and just destroy them. Despite the drawbacks of buying private there is obviously more chance of knowing some pretty crucial history so for older L322's ( i.e all of them now) I'm coming round to the idea of just looking at private sales where the car has documented history.

Yes, I agree that it can be a problem. In my personal experiece when buying a used BMW for my wife, whilst the main dealer services were shown on the online service record, we were also presented with a service invoice from an independent dealer with the name and address of the previous owner removed. This was only for one service though, so it wasn't too much hassle for them to produce. Kev
