Things to look out for are few:

Check to see if it’s had the turbo drain mod done, or if it smokes on hard acceleration over 2500 rpm. Some need the mod more than others, mine never had it and a good boot every now and then kept most of the smoke at bay.

Check for oil in the coolant, or in the V. This usually means the oil cooler seals have gone, it’s a fiddly job but many have done it DIY….

Look down at the front of the engine at the belt tensioner, the AUC belt should sit in the middle, if it’s off a bit then the tensioner is on the way out. Again not a massive expensive job and DIY if you are so inclined.

There should be no knocks or bangs from the suspension. At all….. if there are then budget for some bushes or ball joints.

Look at the top of the engine and lift up the plastic cover, just clips into place on some ball and socket pins, see if the 4 hoses to the plenum look smooth like inter cooler hoses or slightly profiled rubber, the smooth type are the update. The older design tends to split and cause loss of power. Easy swap with some basic tools. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

There are a few guides and known issue threads about.

When I bought it the oil cooler was leaking and it had oil in the coolant. That got sorted and coolant flushed a few times, no cooler issues since. Think it was second one my independent specialist had done. When it went in for its next service they had done more than a dozen, so I think it’s the main issue the 4.4 suffers with. My oil cooler was warped/cracked so needed a new one. Some folk have just got away with the seals.

The little plastic coolant connector broke near the top of the radiator, folk tend to catch it doing repairs or it fails with vibration over time. Did that myself, though you have to get all the together with it from LR at about £90.

Suspension got stuck in off road height… I just cleared the exhaust on the compressor, no issues since, £700 odd saving….

Rear brake pipe split last Christmas which then stuffed the seal in the master cylinder as pedal went down to floor… that was over £600 to have all brake lines replaced and master cylinder.

I’ve just fitted a new LR battery and new side steps as one was rusted through and it currently has a loose rattling front brake dust shield I need to sort next week.

That’s it I think. Only first 2 issues are 4.4 specific. I love it. The engine is epic. Can’t think of anywhere else I’d rather be sat for the money to be honest.

£585 a year road tax is a pain, but hope to do more mileage now pandemic restrictions have eased a bit.

No, that’s the 3.6. I skipped that as I didn’t need the worry. I get that thousands have never had an issue, but not for me….

Mine hasn’t had the drain mod and doesn’t smoke, so you will have to review that on a car by car basis perhaps.

Never had any turbo issues on mine either.

They are few and far between on the 4.4. There really isn’t too much to worry about beyond wear and tear and a few odd niggles. Buy on condition and history, budget to get the oil and fluids done on the gearbox, diffs and brakes. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
