I do not know if I am imagining things but...just got my RR back on the road, besides a service, I fitted the following new parts to the front offside - Nearside to do next
Complete strut / knuckle / bearing / hub / all suspension and steering arms / ball joints / drive shaft / oil seal / caliper / hose and all fasteners were renewed.

Thing is when I split the knuckle / drive shaft, the ABS reluctor ring was 'rust welded' to the inside of the knuckle, so the ring was stationary when the car was moving, the old ABS sensor ( Which I renewed ) was obviously not getting a signal.
I never had any fault / warning lights at all. Now it is all re-assembled as it should be, the car seems better to drive, the gearbox 'seems' to be more responsive and changes seem slightly smoother.

Besides the ABS sensor signal going to the ABS unit, I read somewhere that it also sends a speed signal to the gearbox system, which could account for the way the box feels fresher.

Am I correct about the signal going to the box? starting to wonder if it is just my imagination about how the car feels, I also changed the front diff oil and next job is to change the transfer box oil and gearbox oil / filter.

Any thoughts appreciated.

IIRC it's the rear passenger (RHD) side ABS sensor that sends a speed signal to the engine/gearbox ECU, and a few other places I dare say...

You may have had some drag on the front that was holding the fatty back a bit..!!

I have noticed the "perceived" improvement after working on a fatty, so it could just be that....  Pete

Cheers Pete, sounds like you are right about which sensor supplies the signal.

The car 'feels better' now, whilst it was off the road I got used to borrowing my daughters Insignia, maybe getting back into the Fatty has affected me in some way.

I have limited experience of ABS - wouldn't a seized / non turning ABS ring give rise to a light / code? My logic is that the car would think that the wheel was skidding (maybe only when braking) and I'd expect the ABS might actually be called into service(!) or at least an error flagged up.

Like I said, no experience and more than happy to be educated!!

It could do but you have to remember what it says on the boot and bonnet.... "Range Rover" this roughly translates to "Anything can and probably will happen"

I would imaging the ABS might not work very well with a non moving ring, but the ring may do nothing when just using normal braking.... Pete

Prior to my fitting new parts, I did have a moment due to an idiot whereby I had to 'stomp big style' on the anchors. The ABS seemed to work fine, as to 'were all four corners doing the same?' I don't know. As I was trying to avoid an impact and the car stopped quickly I thought no more on the subject. One of those 'Change of underwear moments'

But you have to remember that, as our very knowledgeable Haylands put it so succinctly It is a 'Range Rover' Most of us know to our cost what that translates to, from to to I know the feeling well.

Now I am in that temporary world of 'Luvvly jubbly it's all working' world.
