Early L405 faults / problems

Hello

my dad is looking ot get one of the earlier L405's with the 4.4 V8 Engine

hes unsure of the reliability of the newer RR so I thought it would be worth asking the experts juist to see common faults and fixes as well as general things to be aware of when viewing vehicles, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Honestly, if a 2013 model showed faults and bugs in the first few years, that’s a PITA for the original owner, but they should all have been sorted under warranty when they showed up.

Asking about bugs on an 8 year old car that’s very highly specced is just too open a question to get a clear answer on.

If someone bought it new for £80k+ and ignored any faults or bugs that showed up under warranty, that would be a strange owner indeed. I would look for a low number of owners, FSH, and assume that any “teething problems” had already been sorted out half a decade before you buy it.

Sure, check everything, get an inspection, but people who tell you that the first couple of years production had bugs seem to ignore the fact that there is a warranty to take care of that stuff, for free, so any sensible owner would have done that. Not all owners are sensible though….

I picked up a 2013 AB in late March. One fault that had been there from new: some rubber boots needed fitting over the hydraulic pipes as they vibrated against the deplorable side steps. Can’t believe nobody queried that for 8 years, but maybe they assumed it was supposed to whistle on cornering.

Otherwise, it’s been bulletproof (touch wood)

Same as MonkeyMan above, mines a 2013 (2012 MY) Vogue SE one previous owner and had 85,000 on the clock when I got it last year. It's now just under 90,000 and (touch wood) have had no issues with it. I did notice that one recall was not done and that's where the rear spoiler rubs on the D Pillar trim. But, they are only minor marks so am not bothered.

Canada 2013 Range Rover 5.0 SC V8 Santorini Black

I am the second owner of my 2013 with 160,000 km. I have replaced my DVD/NAVI unit due to the DVD player stopping (eBay $125) and the rear seat entertainment module due to one screen not receiving an signal to turn in (eBay $125-dealer paid).

Other than that, front suspension components which are maintenance items at this mileage. It came with a full JLR service history with all the expensive things done as maintenance. Dan. 🇨🇦 2013 L405 5.0 SCV8

United Kingdom 2016 Range Rover Autobiography SDV8 Loire Blue

Had mine since last Feb and has, touch wood, been more or less flawless. Buy a well maintained car, keep up with the service, drive it serenely and, save for wear and tear items (of which there are many tbf), you should be golden. Unless you're very unlucky, the main components are remarkably robust. L405 4.4 AB Loire Blue

England 2013 Range Rover Vogue SE SDV8 Luxor

I bought a 4.4 2013 about six months ago, 70k on the clock. As has been said before, no problems, just wonderful. Inspection revealed that two front brake pipes near to the wheels, show corrosion, not urgent.
Worth the gamble, so far.
I would add, wouldn’t buy privately, paid the dealer price and got 18 months warranty. 2013 SDV8 4.4 SE Luxor.

United Kingdom 2014 Range Rover Vogue SE SDV8 Santorini Black

I have a 97,000 2014 L405 Vogue SE. I am the second owner and a friend of mine bought it brand new - apart from routine maintenance items like bushes and tyres it has been faultless - ride improved considerably when LR changed the valve chest in the front suspension for the post 2015 type under extended warranty too.

I am about to replace it with a 2015 "65 plate" car and the only reason is for the AdBlue Euro 6 engine for ULEZ otherwise it would be a keeper.

As has been said buy the right car and enjoy it. 2016 (L405) Autobiography in Black with Ivory - for ULEZ

I’ve read a similar comment a few times … also commenting on the electrics being better.

Just what were the issues that got worked out, or what makes the 2015 MY better ( beyond the emissions type stuff ) ?

I’m curious as I’m strongly thinking of coming back to the fatty fold from my Evoque at the moment, but I would be in the 70k-100k miles 2013 - 15 range of vehicles. V8 or else ...

2015 - 15 plate cars with dynamic response suspension (generally 4.4 TDV8) generally have the improved valve chest in the front suspension. I had my 2014 car upgraded to one of these under warranty. That improves the ride.

2015 - 65 plate cars are when the AdBlue cars come online. These are cheaper to tax, and can enter congestion zones like London with lower or zero charges. 2016 (L405) Autobiography in Black with Ivory - for ULEZ

United Kingdom 2007 Range Rover Vogue SE TDV8 Java Black

By contrast I have a 15 plate EURO 6 MY16 with ~50k on the clock, and in the last couple of years and ~20k it has had 3 coolant leaks (thermostat housing, rear HVAC coolant pipes, one of the radiator hoses) the rear diff pinion was leaking so thats been done, restricted performance due to one of the exhaust temp sensors failing, both rear handbrake motors replaced as the casings were cracked and probably other bits.

Still not bad in the grand scheme of things, but potentially something to be said about buying slightly higher milage where allot of the work has been done.

There are quite a few EURO 6 15 plates that are often overlooked... Sold - Bell a 2015 MY16 Loire Blue Autobiography 4.4 SDV8
Previously George a 2007 MY07 Java Black VSE 3.6 TDV8
Previously a 04 MY04 Defender 90 Sad
