So, I've now done 7,000 miles since I bought the car and I have noticed one potential thing.

Occasionally, under heavy acceleration, I get a light amount of light blue smoke out the back. The conditions under which this seems to happen is when I give a sudden bootful of throttle and the engine reaches 3,000RPM or more.

Reading the workshop manual, the secondary fixed vane turbo comes in at about 2,400 RPM. Given the engine hardly ever goes over 2,000RPM in normal driving, and no issues with any smoke on the primary turbo and normal running, this says to me that I'm getting the small amount of light blue smoke from oil burning when the secondary turbo is boosting hard.

My immediate thoughts would be that the oil seals on the turbo are worn and it might be worth considering a recondition at some point down the line. However, I'm aware there was an updated oil drain hose design released by Land Rover and restricted drain hoses can cause this issue too? My third theory is that the turbo is probably hardly ever engaged and therefore, the first few times it does get engaged, it might burn off some drips of oil which have collected and once it's hot and at operating temperature, the light cloud goes away (which it seems to) - all age and mileage related and nothing to worry about and I should do an Italian tune up more often.

Other people's experiences? It's used approx 400ml of oil (this being Land Rover, also includes any inevitable leaks) in 7,000 miles (assuming the digital meter is accurate). 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Don’t get worried, just make a point of getting the revs up above 2,500rpm every now and then.
This will clear any oil from the secondary turbo , but obviously leave a blue smoke cloud as the burning oil is passed through the exhaust.

Mine was a very heavy smoker , virtually from the day I bought it, but I was fortunate to get JLR to fund the turbo drain modification, which completely cured the smoke problem.

You can expect to pay c£1k if you want the mod done by a respected independent garage.

I did suspect it may be oil collecting in the turbo, where it's not regularly used and therefore, there's no charged air to keep the oil within its channels. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Another benefit of getting the second turbo spinning is the the CSOV air change over valve is prone to sticking due to lack of use, particularly if it has not been replaced with the later modified type.

If you look down between the back of the radiator and the front of the engine you can easily see the valve.
If it has got a nut on top of the spigot it has not been replaced, but no nut you have the new version.

Gary: I had similar issues but not exactly like yours. After I got a little excited on a slip road & passed everything in sight, the dreaded Restricted Performance light came on.
Long story short, the CSOV actuator rod has gummed up due to lack of use & when the Indie took it apart & cleaned it, it worked perfectly. He did say, that on several test drives afterwards he couldn't see who was behind him because of the smoke trail.
Now when she sees 2800-3000rpm she's as clean as a whistle. He advised me to hit the 3000rpm every now & again to make sure the second turbo comes in, I do & so far she's as clean as can be.

Easy fix = Boot it more often when warm. I do it every time I drive it and never see smoke and mine doesn’t have the turbo drain mod

Yes, I try and get my second turbo spun up every journey, once it’s warmed of course. Not had the turbo drain mod…. No issues….

No, it won’t do that. It will only Bong and issue a warning as you pass a predetermined speed previously set by yourself.

Gary: I've never used 'sport' mode, just select a gear with the paddles & gently run her up to the desired rpm....2800-3000 even at those revs, she still doesn't sound stressed!  2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

I don’t even do that, I just press the accelerator faster and a bit further than normal and it changes down. I hold my foot there to stop it changing up till you run out of road lol.

Though in all seriousness, as long as you get it spun up it doesn’t really matter how. I don’t use Sport mode much.

I do find the paddles offer a quicker change down if you want a quick overtake though.
