I had to replace my steering column because of a faulty steering column lock. The job is more daunting than it is difficult. With some patience, and a reasonably good tool supply, it is relatively straight forward. I bought the replacement column from a UK breakers yard on eBay for about 150GBP.
Incidentally, if you do go down this route it is well worth doing some preventative maintenance on the replacement shaft before installing it. The reason my steering lock failed was because the grease in the worm-drive gearbox had turned to concrete. By removing the roll pins retaining the cover it is very easy to dismantle the gearbox and re-lube it.
Also, when you receive the replacement steering column you can test that all is working by removing the plastic covers around the steering wheel and accessing the electrical connector. There is sufficient length in the loom to allow you to plug in the replacement with the existing column in situ. When it works, it gives you a warm feeling . . . . !
Good luck!

Well done Stu, that sounds very satisfying.

Interestingly enough, an indy told me that the issues are probably memory rather than motor related. He suggested changing the memory settings by pressing '2' through the cycle and then the option of preference. Sure enough, the steering wheel hasn't dropped since then!

The button to lower the suspension isn't working either (the one located on the driver's door), I wonder whether this is an issue with MOST? --------
