I just own a P400e (2019) since two months. I potter around the village as much as
possible in EV mode. This means driving a total up to 20-30km's, then charge again.

This works fine, and is ideal since an ICE would not heat up on these 3-4 km trips,
even if you do a total of 40km in a few hours. One of the reasons I traded the D5 SD4.

Then suddenly, the 4th stretch, or on starting in the morning, it goes off with the ICE.
Sometimes I drive 50m to the gate, get out to open it (ignition switches of once the
door is opened), get back in and it starts the ICE. Even fully charged, EV-on ánd
the ECO mode engaged.. .. puzzles me.

One time it started several times in EV. Then started in ICE. I switched off, started
again.. .. EV. Next stop, after 3 km's, it only started in ICE. Re-started three times,
no joy. Even programmed navigation to go home ( 4 km's..), but with the remaining
EV range on 20km's it kept running on ICE while waiting at a traffic light..

I wondered if it has anything to do with the small battery needing charging. So I
put a voltage meter in the sigaret lighter, but that stays neatly on 13V, even when
it just started the ICE ... ..

Anyone who has a lead ?

Our Outlander PHEV has similar behaviour in the colder weather, it decides to use the ICE to generate the power needed to operate the heatpump.
It also gets into a mode if it's run in EV mode and not used 15 litres of fuel in 3 months it runs the ICE to maintain the fuel system, it resets once 15 litres of fuel has been added. Again, I dont know if any of the above applies to the P400e BMW i3 Electric Car

It behaves like this in cold weather. Also there are times when I just accelerate a little to overpass, the ICE engages and then it runs for a while, even at the red light! I am amused, as this behaviour kind of defeats the whole start-stop system...

If the engine is cold it will run until it’s reached operating temperature. BMW i3 Electric Car

I've read-up about this. Seems whole EV doesn't work below -5C.
