United Kingdom 2016 Range Rover Autobiography SDV8 Farallon Black

My old man has the 3.6 and I have the 4.4 (all be it in an L405) my fuel economy is better than his and I have more power. I believe the 3.6 can be prone to turbo problems.

A friend who works in a dealership steered me away from the 3.0, apparently he replaces one every week but never does a 4.4

Again, just bear in mind that over 90% of the diesels sold are the 3 litre so, incidence of problems will be higher.

I was recently in the same position as you.
When I was researching the same subject last month, it became clear to me that the SDV8 L405 was the way to go for me.
It was always nagging in the back of my mind, if I bought a V6 engine failure could happen to me and I would always worry about that.

Round trips through Eastern Europe also weighed on my mind, being stranded a long way from home would be no fun even with LR Assist/ LR warranty etc I realise other un fortunate failures may put me in the same position, but felt this is one I could at least control.

Apparently there is no preventative measure, nor improved crankshaft. As with any Land Rover product, a comprehensive warranty is essential - The car's are just so complex and anything in the engine bay usually involves removing other things first in order to get to what you need to get to. So, if it were to happen you, you'd be covered by your warranty.

Running costs are significantly different between the 3.0 and 4.4. Also, once you go above 3 litres, you'll find the number of insurance companies who insure engines of that size significantly drops (and therefore, be careful of higher prices).

What you can do however is twice annual oil changes and an oil analysis (they're about £30) maybe once a year. You send off some of the used oil in a little bottle and get a report back. It will identify metals and compounds in the engine oil, helping identify any parts which are failing.

If you can only get the 280HP 3 litre on your budget, I'd probably say to go for the 4.4L, as an additional 55bhp is noticeable. If you can afford the 305bhp then, the additional weight on the front end really doesn't get outweighed by only a other 30bhp.

I genuinely wouldn't mind the 5L. In a post covid world, we won't do as many miles so, a gas guzzler doesn't matter too much.

I just hate going to a petrol station. If they fitted a larger petrol tank so, you're not filling up every 300 miles, I totally would.

My fill up was £119 the other day in my 5.0SC. Just let it go down and pop 89 litres a time in it. With dual tanks and dodgy fuel cages you got to live a bit a gamble whether you have enough fuel or not.

But it’s cleaner and better for the environment than any of those diesels. Besides no matter how good the 3.0L diesel may be, I could deal with an underpowered fatty. My definition of adequate begins with the 5.0SC. It’s not slow but also don’t feels fast. It’s adequate.

But visiting a petrol station a few times a month is still too much. Once a month is enough.

Here's my experience of a 3.6:

2x leaking rocker cover gaskets - 8 hour garage job $$$
Vacuum pump - $$$
Driveway clean to get the oil off $$$
2x EGRs $$
Thermostat housing $$$
Intercooler hoses $
Many gallons of coolant $$

Seized parking brake and failed head gasket(s) - got rid! 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

then I was lucky, I only changed the intercooler pipes and a camshaft sensor as a prevention, for the rest only frequent servicing and good oil

the L405 3.0L also doesn't have the dynamic (self-levelling) suspension which makes the 4.4 better round the corners.

4.4 all the way.

BTW get the oil cooler done as early as poss. It's a known weak spot and once done, no more worries. Also look for the 2nd turbo oil drain mod on the 4.4L.
