tdv6 vs tdv8

what sort of numbers does the tdv6 go pop? is it quite common or not really? is it a certain age / mileage of a vehicle? and when it does happen what the cost of repair etc? i am looking for one as you will have seen by my other thread but so far am not looking at the tdv6 because of engine issues but am wondering if i am worrying about nothing.....

I have pinched this screenshot from Facebook of the local independent garage that I use.
It shows the amount of work involved to repair this 3 litre L405 after suffering a crankshaft failure recently.
New engines and labour costs won’t come cheap Big Cry

When I was in Disco world, my D4 was an amazing example.

Serviced properly (over serviced actually) by proper indies, and was like my baby.

Crank snapped out of the blue, £12600 to fix Shocked

Fortunately covered by warranty direct who paid the whole bill within 5 days.

There are ALOT of failures, even bearing in mind that forums attract the bad news. I would not buy another 3.0 TDV6.

Some of the indies are full of them.

There are not lots of posted failures of the 3.0 TDv6 engine in the L405, based on this forum at least - and my understanding is this is the best L405 and L322 forum in the world. There are some (not lots) of examples and there are also some strong examples of the affected owners getting the car fixed FOC via LR/ under a warranty. There is also a theory that if the car is well maintained and serviced and correct oils are used, there is even less to be worried about, if indeed there is anything to worry about (5th year of owning a L405 TDv6 and it’s superb). There are also examples of big things going wrong with the 4.4 TDV8 L405, just as every make and marque of vehicle can encounter problems 👍🏻

People will buy what they want and will buy what they’re comfortable with. If not seen, here is some hopefully informative and balanced reading well contributed to by knowledgeable ffrr forum members 👍🏻

the 3.0L also doesn't have the active cornering suspension which the 4.4 does.

Both have self levelling air suspension, but the V8 has active roll control. Some people aren't bothered about not having it, but I drove both straight after each other and it was a must. But just my opinion MY23 Panamera E-Hybrid

I can second the drive back to back approach, I did that and the 4.4 was the clear winner for me personally. Have to say the 3.0 didn’t worry me, there doesn’t seem to be so many folk reporting it on the L405 compared to heading over to the Disco forums. Sold - Bell a 2015 MY16 Loire Blue Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Not wishing to make any comment on the type of engine to choose, but if you take a quick look at a recent “you tube video” by Namz Boost after searching Cheap Range Rover…. You can see the interior condition of a V6.

Test drove a 4.4 then a 3.0 back to back because wanted a 4.4 but was doing the try them all thing… and went for the 3.0 because? the car we ended up buying was better spec’d, nicer and in much better condition than the 4.4 and was great to drive anyway…

Having had both this is the thing for me. On the flip side I average 34mpg in my tdv6 vs 26 in my 4.4

4..4 also has bigger brakes and better stopping. Flip side. Brakes are quite a bit cheaper for tdv6. 2013 L405 AB 4.4SDV8 Luxor/Ivory, 2007 Vogue TDV8 Epson Green/Sand, 2008 Vogue TDV8 Buckingham Blue/Sand, 2003 Vogue 4.4 LPG Epsom Green/Sage, 1998 Vogue SE 4.6 LPG Epsom Green/Cream

Can only speak of D4 ownership.

Panicked and got rid of mine when a friend had the dreaded snapped crank in his D4 at 20k miles and 30 months old Shocked
All sorted under warranty luckily enough. Mine was a few weeks away from 3 years old and at the time the extended LR warranty (underwritten by a 3rd Party) wasn’t covering the snapped crank Crying or Very sad

I often regret the decision to get rid of it because it was one of the best Land Rovers I’ve ever owned. Enough to get another V6, probably not. But in reality the chances of it happening are pretty slim.
