How long do your pads and discs last ?

Hi All,

Well, I am a week into ownership of my car and I am loving it. I used it this weekend to tow my box trailer and race car down to Brands Hatch and you can hardly tell the trailer is one the back !

Went I got home this evening I got a low brake pad warning light...

Now the car was sold by a LR dealer to the previous owner in May 2021 at 65,000 miles and I have a sales preparation receipt for new pads and discs all round.

The car has now done 76,000 miles and all the discs are very worn, with a big lip on the edge.. like you would expect after 50 or 60 thousand miles, certainly not 10k which it has done since they were done. And the fact I now have a brake pad warning makes me think that the dealer never changed them ?

What do you think ?

Thanks

I normally get 25/30k to a set of discs - and I am quite heavy on the brakes / don’t hang around.

I also get minimum two sets of pads to a set of discs.

At 10k miles to your discs - either it’s spent the last 12 months doing track days or somebody / the dealer is telling porkies 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

I'd expect way more than 11k miles out of a set of pads, let alone discs which should last at least 20-30k miles.

Sounds like they weren't replaced when they should have been. 2017 4.4 SDV8 Autobiography

If the pins for the front pads tap out easily, then they have been out. recently, but if they are seized, then they haven’t been out for at least 2 years roughly.

Mine's on 39,000 and it went into a MD for a service last week. On the video that they sent me the guy said that there was 8mm of material left on the front pads and very little disc wear. The rears had 5mm left and the discs are showing signs of wear, but 'nothing to worry about at the moment'.

I would say that your's were definitely not replaced 11,000 miles ago, unless they used 2nd hand parts!!! 2017 SDV8 Autobiography

They have simply not been changed for what ever reason... Heavy usage would be 25k gentle use can see 50k between brake changes...

I fully agree with CTC's above comment, in well over thirty tears of maintaining my cars, I have only had to change the brake discs on three or four cars, one being my current FF. the discs I removed were very, very old and had been on the car for many years. The 'new' discs ( Pagid ) now have about 10.000 miles on them with no discernible wear at all.

This morning the low pads warning was no longer showing on the dash. I had a look at the pads as best I could and the ones I could see still have meat on them.

Aside from the disc face, the rest of the disc looks ok, the centre bell and the vents round the edge are not rusty.

I called into my local LR dealer as I had to pick up parts and I asked the parts guy if he'd have a look at the brakes. He said the rear discs especially were quite scored/worn but he also said from the general condition they didn't look that old. Maybe the last owner just liked to ride the brakes !

He suggested I get a free health check done as they would check the brakes, so that what I've done. It's booked in on the 1st April and I'll let you know how it goes. 2016 AB SDV8 Barolo black

If it has been used a lot for towing that could be reflected in heavier rear brake wear. John
