Seat belt replacement

Is there anything to worry about replacing front and passenger seat belts? Mine are not retracting back well. Dealer quoted $900 to replace one. Part online is just over 100.

Any help appreciated

They are pretty easy for a competent DIYer, just follow the workshop manual and common sense.

Have you tried cleaning them?

There’s lots of info and YouTube vids on this… but ultimately adding furniture polish or possibly silicone to dried clean belts fixes this. Just make sure they are dry before they retract to avoid damp or mould issues.

I tried this as a half arsed attempt and it made a big difference. I plan to do it properly at some point as it’s either a short term fix, or it may last a lot longer if done properly (which I didn’t). Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

Is this tea a thing then? The old polish trick? All my seatbelts take an age to retract and it’s very annoying especially when unknowing passengers shut the door and trap the belt buckle- such a rewarding noise…… 2007 TDV8 Vogue SE

Whilst I can say that when cleaned and polish applied, they do retract much more quickly! What I cannot say is how long it lasts for as my attempt was half arsed.
The web sites and videos properly cleaned the belts by soaking beforehand, whereas I used a fabric cleaner spray bottle. It got a lot of crap out tho!
I used cheap furniture polish too whereas others may work better.

But, again, that half arsed effort did improve things for me, and can only assume a proper attempt would work better or possibly last longer.

Certainly worth a try before buying and fitting new belts… Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

That’s brilliant, I’ll give it a go, any improvement is better than what they are like now, I’m fed up of wincing and repeating myself to others to be careful when shutting the doors! 2007 TDV8 Vogue SE

As per Ffrr-lover, I found that extending them all the way out & a thorough soaking / clean using a detergent (I used a carpet cleaning fluid as I had some to hand) then allowing to fully dry before reeling back in made a world of difference. It’s also worth removing the b pillar trim as there’s a metal bar attached to the body that the belt slides over that becomes clogged up with fluff etc and slows the belt down Thumbs Up
