TDV8 Turbo replacement

I just picked up another (cheap) 2008 3.6 TDV8 with turbo issues, I was going to break it for spares but the vehicle is really very good apart from the re-occuring turbo fault:

P132E - LH turbo actuator/restricted performance and oil misting around the RH turbo that is coating the driveshaft below as well, there is no smoke from the exhaust or other faults showing.

I have lubed the actuator on the LH turbo and moved it with the aid of a pair of a pair of long nose pliers, but the same fault keeps coming back intermittently. I have been quoted just under £8k to fit a pair of reconditioned turbos!!!!

Can anyone better that level of rediculous?

I am looking into doing the job myself..... much to my partners dismay and generally horrified look at that job (I am getting on in years).

A: Has anyone changed the turbos themselves? If so, did you go through the prescribed route in the manual of dropping the sump/diff and aproaching it that way or drop the whole engine and gearbox out the bottom of the car as a single unit and go in that way? Was either option as bad as it sounds?

B: Can anyone recommend someone to spply a pair of good quality reconditioned/remanufactured turbos at a sensible price if I do go down the route of tackling the job myself?

Driver side turbo (UK) is doable from Beneath the car although access is tight and they’re not for the faint hearted!
Passenger side is a different story as the diff has to come out to gain access which again is still tight.
We’ve do re them all sorts of different ways including engine out and there’s no easy solution I’m afraid, especially if your doing it at home and it’s your first one. Just be sure your turbos are actually knackered before you change them as its a lot of work and cost if not.

Thanks, this would be my first turbo on a TDV8, I have done a few on VW/Audi cars which although not always easy are simple in comparison to this. Time is on my side, so one to deliberate over for a while.

It’s a horrible job, I’m handy with the spanners and used to be a LR/JAG tech and when my turbos went- i didn’t contemplate doing it myself for very long when I saw what was involved- engine out is really the best way as it is so tight as has been said 2007 TDV8 Vogue SE

Drop the subframe off, then diff off. It's not an engine out job...

Fit new OEM turbos. It's not a job you want to do twice Whistle

My local Indy quoted £1,000 to replace the O/S turbo. They said it was the actuator but I can’t find anyone who can advise if it’s possible to replace just that and not the entire turbo. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue
Had- 2008 TDV8 Vogue SE in Java black
Had - 2007 S/C in Stornoway Grey

Thanks everyone.

I pulled the pipe off of the front of the oily RH turbo this afternoon, I found more oil and there is some play in the impeller - so that one is definately due for replacement. Given the intermittent fault with the LH actuator, I will have them both replaced it just is not worth replacing just the actuator assembly after all the labour involved in getting to it.
Keith Gott Land Rovers near Alton have quoted me around £5k using reconditioned turbos from their supplier. Certainly better than any other quote I have had so far.

Unless the price of turbos have gone up recently, that's a little steep

We are about £4k using brand new OEM units...

That’s a lot! Aj Land Rover in Alton did both mine with brand new turbos for just over £3k a year or so back 2007 TDV8 Vogue SE

If you have the time and doing them yourself you could chance the actuator if you can source one, but they’re not cheap!
If you’re paying someone else I would not hesitate and have new turbos fitted, and as Mikey advised, use OEM as you don’t want another failure in the near future.
Once done if you look after turbos they should last a long time, even the lifetime of the engine if your lucky.
Always let them warm a little before heavy work, then let them slow and cool before turning off, I always let the engine idle for 20 secs or so before stopping. And of course regular oil changes Thumbs Up

There has never been a need to do idling before shut down on turbo's since the days a long time ago when they didn't have water cooling and were run on mineral multigrade oils. The main thing for turbo life is not to work them hard before the engine is up to operating temperature (oil not water) and change the oil regularly and use the recommended spec. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

That’s interesting, price has changed a bit! Probably their reputation has grown as they looked fairly new looking at the workshop when mine was there. I thought they were good, kept me updated and sent me videos of my car and what they found. They also refuse to fit anything other than new stuff so that initially filled me with confidence 2007 TDV8 Vogue SE
