What do you think?

Hi all

In particular members of the 4.2SC club

Been on here a couple of months reading up and I’ll copy my welcome post below

I have been watching the main for sale sites for about 9 months to decide where I want to be with my first FFRR.

Have now narrowed down to an ideal spec as follows;

2007 - 2009 4.2SC
Ideally Tonga Green, followed by blue or grey
Clear Glass
Silver wheels
Ivory leather
Burr walnut
Detachable towbar

Looking at budget as low as possible with a view to refreshing interior and mechanicals (I have room, tools and some experience although lacking David’s workshop and lift Bow down )

High mileage fine as long as minimal rust and recoverable leather

If I could find another £2k car to join the elite I would love to but seem to be a bit thin on the ground

Hi all
Looking to get my first FFRR this year.

Mrs Seriously has a new Evoque P300e AB and daughter has 2014 FL2 she picked up last summer (36k Metropolis full LR SH)

Youngest son 27 has an X351 XJ !!!

Undecided which model, definitely L322 2007 onwards either a 4.2sc or 5.0sc. I only do about 3k miles a year mix of short trips and long holidays in Cornwall etc. Handy with spanner’s and don’t mind fixing mechanicals and gremlins myself.

Want ideally blue or green, clear glass, ivory interior and good body condition. Over 100k miler is ideal.

Decision is whether to go cheap and bring up to scratch (preferred) or find a better one and pay more

Thanks all

So I think I have found a good candidate on AT for £6k

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/2...obcid=soc3

(Haven’t figured out how to copy a link yet)

Ticks nearly all boxes

MOT and CarVertical history very clean. Looks to be 3 owners (2 till Aug las year)

But….

I have a bad foot at moment so can’t travel easily and it’s in Stockport - I am in Colchester.

So I am thinking of having a chat with (apparent) dealer tomorrow am to find out what doesn’t work and what service history is like and what she sounds like…

with a view to deposit and remote purchase and delivery firm to collect next week.

Tell me how stupid I’m being … or not

Your thoughts and comments much appreciated

P.S. having brought it to the attention of the forum please don’t sweep it away from under my feet

I bought mine for £2.5k plus delivery, so just under £3k all in and have done a huge amount of work to it to get it the way I want it to be.

When it turned up I was happy with it but I’ve been picking faults with it and getting it up to a standard that I’m happy with ever since.

I don’t mind so much with this one because it was cheap. If I was starting out again, and spending £5-6k I’d want to see a car myself and go over it thoroughly. Check how it drives, see if it’s lumpy when cold, see if the bearings in the Supercharger are noisy, check for rust in and around the rear arches, etc too.

That car does look tidy though. There’s no wear visible at all on the drivers seat which is very rare for a higher mileage car with a cream interior. The MOT history is nice and clean without anything worth noting too.

So - have spoken to Dealer this morning.

He is doing me a video so I can closely see wheel arches and tailgate lips for rust, suspension up and down, engine running and dash board (no lights apparently)

Also sending photos of service history 8 stamps apparently

Say all works except RSE no knocks and comfortable ride

I think if all checks out and I can get for under £5k I may be going for a punt on this.

Worst case I should be able to pass on in South east at similar money Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

I’ll post video if I can work out how for some expert opinions

Thanks

Douglas

Hi all

I now have a video of car walk around, starting and running and suspension up and down but don’t know how to link to here

And help gratefully accepted

Car looks to be dent and rust free. Some scratches but looks tidy for the price

Thanks

Douglas

I bought mine about 18 months ago and have not regretted it despite some rust that was not visible when I viewed the car.
So I would check and double check the arches it can be difficult to see and almost impossible to see any cill rust without removing the trim panel.

If you can get some sort of guarantee on the rust then go for it. But be prepared for some big bills just in case.

The video will have to be put somewhere else (youtube maybe) and then linked too.

Thanks David

This purchase is going to be a brave one as I have short term mobility issues. I won’t be running on a shoe string and I view this as a therapeutic project as much as getting a nice car Whistle

New skill learnt - how to upload videos to youtube Thumbs Up

Here it is

Anything I should be alarmed about?

Thanks in advance

When his phone started there was a Bong whilst the camera was pointing at the window switch pack. I’d be curious to know what the message was that cleared. Could have been just a TPMS error as the warning light was on when he showed the dashboard.

Ask him to open the rear door, crouch down and look at the lip on the rear wheel arch between 12pm and 3pm.

The engine does sound very quiet, no knocking from the Supercharger.

Guy doesn’t sound like he knows an awful lot about Range Rovers. Is it a dealer selling it? Strange setting in the middle of a housing estate. If he’s claiming to be a dealer ask him what warranty the car comes with and who is underwriting it.

Tax ran out in December.

Won’t be rust on front arches…. They are aluminium…

As above, seems like he doesn’t know the cars that well.

MOT history not bad, only consumables looking through them…

Thanks both

On phone he confirmed bong was TPMS and I saw arch and looked ok where visible.

I would call him a trader rather than proper dealer. Has a proper NatWest business account “SK CARS” which I’ve verified. No warranty at this age/mileage/price which is what I was expecting.

Anyway deal now done £5,300 being collected for me next week. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Wish me luck - joining the club.

I’ll start a new thread when I get it home

Thanks

Douglas
