DPF what to expect?

I am about to buy a 2013 SDV8. I currently own a TDV8 with no DPF. Many of my journeys each week are short (2 to 3 miles each). I’ve read some of the information on here but would like to hear from owners in a similar position to me. What issues can I expect relating to the DPF? Will I have to do one 20 minute + journey each week for example? Any experiences/information welcomed….thank you

I'd stick with a non dpf motor for that sort of journey plans 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

I have a 2015 SDV8. When I first bought it I worked 20 miles away with daily Mway trips so never gave the DPF a thought. I have since changed jobs and now work only six miles from home, all on 30 MPH roads! I suddenly thought I may have an issue, but have been commuting this now for 18 months along with any other travel required and no DPF issues so far, (hope I’ve not tempted fate). I do enjoy a drive out in the country at weekends so it does get quite a few good runs. If for any reason I cant I make sure it gets a decent journey at least once a fortnight. I’m sure others will have different experience but that’s mine, hope it helps.
Only thing I would say is I do get service required after circa 5k miles so it does appear to be doing lots of re-gens or failed re-gens, not sure which.

Get an iid, monitor soot level. My mileage dropped like a stone due to covid and I no longer do the mileage. Iid has been a godsend, you don’t have to travel far for a dpf burn, worth reading the mega thread on here which has been an enormous help tbh. I work exactly 1 mile from the house , lazy bastid I know, we drive the long way to work, with a few higher speed runs to clear it. Been caught out loads , without pat at gap’s help and the aforementioned thread , I’d have spunked loads at the dealer.

Thanks for replies.

diesel Dave - I assume you run your 405 on premium diesel?

Mr Tee - iid tool a great idea 👍

TBH no most of the time I just use a decent brand, Esso or Shell, I do treat it now and then to premium, but most of the time use standard diesel.

My SDV8 gets used very little and I never see DPF issues UNLESS it's just shunted around here too much and then it starts to stink (from the exhaust) then I know it's time to have a runout... Thumbs Up

During covid ours has lost some of the longer runs, no DPF warnings etc but our service intervals has been roughly twice a year due to oil dilution even though the short runs are down dual carriageway. It’s back to some nice motorway runs now, but it wasn’t a big issue to be honest. Sold - Bell a 2015 MY16 Loire Blue Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

I was in this exact situation 2 to 3 miles per day for week after week, a monthly 500 mile trip. Only once did I get the orange warning, I took a longer route home and after 12 miles of normal driving on A roads the warning went off. It was never an issue for me. BMW i3 Electric Car

Can anybody give me a rough guide for this:

If I drive 10 local miles daily in my L405 when roughly can I expect to see a dpf regen warning?

Many thanks…..

The driver handbook says automatic regeneration takes place between 190 and 560 miles so I guess I’ll be nearer 190 miles!😧

Thanks for all replies👍

Is your 10 miles a day, a 2 journey deal, ie 5 each way? and a break in between?

If so you might not get the engine up to temperature to do an automatic regen, and if you do, you certainly wont have the time to complete it.
I have a similar scenario , round trip to local forest with dog each day, but twice a week I do a trip into town 10 mile each way, which generally allows a regen to happen my auto regens are between 100 and 150 mile, so dont believe the handbook.

I have just changed the oil yesterday after system counted down for another oil change, only completed 2286 miles since Mid February's 4Y service. Previous to that oil change early Dec21 after 2000miles.
I have never seen an amber on the dash in 14 months of ownership.

So enjoy the car and go and do a few extra miles, and do the oil changes when it tells you to. Thumbs Up 2018 SE SDV8 4.4 Byron Blue

My daily 10 miles are made up roughly of journeys of 1 to 2 miles in the morning and the same in the evening, so the engine will never get to temperature. I have another petrol car which I’ll use to help.

Just trying to get a rough guide as to what to expect - my last dpf vehicle was a Mitsubishi Shogun and in a year of short journeys I got the yellow dpf light only once.

Thank you for your very helpful reply Thumbs Up
