Please help!! Gearbox fault and codes

Hi everyone,

New guy here, I joined the forum because all you folks seem to be pretty knowledgeable so I’m hoping for some help. I have two issues. I don’t believe they are related but what do I know. I’m a very capable mechanic but some of the electronics are hard to find info on. So here goes!!

We bought our 2011 from a friend with the transfer case clunk/noise. I pulled the transfer case and replaced the loose chain and reinstalled the transfer case. Now the gearbox fault light is on. I’ve cleared by unhooking the battery but as soon as I start it lights back on. I’ve done research and heard everything from battery to a switch. Also it says all special programs don’t work with the fault light upon start up.

The scariest problem is I’m having transmission issues it freaks out loses all forward gears. I have to pull over and turn the truck off then restart it to get home. It sets code P2704-07. Alldata says the transmission needs replaced. I’m hoping not but…

If I do need a transmission where Is a good place to get parts.

Any help is much appreciated!!! Thank you!!!!

Have you recalibrated the transfer case motor? It wouldn't be expected to cause a gearbox fault but worth a try.

I think you need some in depth JLR diagnostics done, it will read deeper than a generic reader.

It maybe a hard fault so will not go on a battery reconnect.

Not a good idea to drive it until it's properly fixed either...

Was it driving OK before you did the chain...? Pete

It sounds like you definitely need to recalibrate the transfer case motor, once they’ve been apart or removed they can forget the correct position, unfortunately as Haylands says you will need specialist diagnostic equipment to do this as most generic ones will not have the correct software to perform the reset.
If anyone knows a different way I’m sure they’ll be along, but we have had to do a couple in our workshop and use an auto data diagnostic centre to do the reset.

That DTC refers to the extended time it's taking for the E clutch to apply. Does the transmission lose drive immediately after the 3-4 upshift? Can you drive it round happily enough in 1st, 2nd & 3rd gears?

I take it your a newcomer and not used this site much before?
Take note of RRPhil, he’s God on these transmissions. It’s always difficult to diagnose without seeing it and we can only tell of our own experiences, but this guy knows them inside out literally Thumbs Up

Thanks for the info so far everyone!!

I have a pretty nice Matco scan tool but it sounds like I’m going to have to take it to a shop with a better scan tool or to Land Rover. Sound correct?

RRPhil, So here’s the strange part I can drive this rover for over an hour no issues then all of a sudden it starts acting up. It seems to not want to downshift or has a minor shudder. I haven’t tried driving it in 1-3. My gut tells me it would be ok. What I did to get home was pulled over stopped. Shut the truck off then restarted and it’s good for a little while. I did service the transmission yesterday with new fluid and filter but it didn’t seem it make a difference.

Thanks!!

Hi guys sorry it took so long to respond. Life gets crazy! So Phil it does drive fine in 1-3 but I can’t drive it like that forever. My thought is I’m going to replace the transmission. I found one rebuilt but I’m not sure it will fit mine. Mine is a 2011 vin salmf1d41ba334918 the one I’m looking at is a 2012 vin salsk2d43ca756327. Is there a way to see if it will work or does anyone know? I got on a rover parts site and they both have the same part numbers but…. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Have you flushed the GB and put a new filter and oil in?
have you checked the line and cooler to make sure there is no blockage/sludge?

i would do both these before changing the GB will cost a couple of hundred $ but i have had several cars with similar issues you describe and both times has fixed the issue and saved me the cost of a new GB.

i go down this route now due to a failure of a TD6 RR gearbox, when they pulled the box i was told a oil change could have prevented failure their analysis pointed to gradual wear on the GB as the oil broke down due to age and use. Since then, i service all GB on my cars and have now saved a few too.

Please note i am in no way a GB specialist or mechanic i am just giving you what my experience has been. 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - Current

Jayk69 appreciate the help! Yes I already tried all that. I ended up replacing the gear box. I’m now struggling with a code. P081C-62 electrical circuit diag, park switch. So I changed the transmission and now if I depress the brake pedal I can’t shift out of park if I don’t touch the brake pedal I can shift. Anyone have any ideas? Alldata says check wiring. Everything looks good but I’m going to start chasing wires and checking switches but I have a hard time believing a switch would fail during a trans swap. Also the trans needs flashed. Does that sound correct? Any hep would be appreciated!! Thanks!!!

So I thought I’d update everyone. The fix was putting the valve body out of my original transmission into the replacement transmission. Seems pretty simple now but I had no idea these vehicles where so particular. Need less to say all is got except gearbox fault on the transfer case. I’ll be digging into that and possibly asking more silly questions.
