M62 V8 4.4 Alternator

Was cruising on the motorway this morning when the red battery light came on. Some intermittent beeping from the rear speaker, the same that gives off phone signal warnings as well. Drove another 20km to where I was going to and hooked up the IID.

NO faults but the battery light is still on and obviously no charging as I plugged in a meter in the cigar lighter socket.

Oddly enough, there's no error logged by the IID.

I could perhaps try to drive to the garage but I'm not taking any chances so I'll have her towed instead.

Guess I'm in for an alternator. I'll do the regular service too while at it. A bit sooner than planned but hopefully will buy me peace of mind during the holiday months here. Because good luck booking with a garage in August...

Changing the alternator isn't that hard. You might want to check the water pump at the same time.

Thanks!

I've taken her in already and I will be fixing some other minor stuff which I had noted down for the regular service time as well.

Ironically, when the tow truck arrived, I fired her up and, of course, no batt warning light and 14V on the outlet Rolling Eyes Perhaps this was a warning shot?

Still, didn't want to take any chances and off we went on the truck. Glad this happened now and not mid August so the alternator will be replaced anyway for good measure...

PS: water pump is 18 months old and checked last February when I had headgaskets and chains done.

Alternator rebuilt! They're putting her back together today so hope I can take a nice weekend trip. Cool

Traced down an intermittent oil leak on the front side of the engine; I was told it was a breather tube that had perished

Doing an oil change, although a bit too soon at 8k km but won't hurt anyway.

Checked pads

Changed front brake hoses + fluids

Checked AT fluid level

Can't wait to pick her up Mr. Green

Yes, Pete! Weekend saved Thumbs Up glad I've found this garage, they love what they're doing and there's nothing they won't do. They seem to enjoy striking things off my laundry lists as much a I do writing them down Laughing

Yes, they come in very short supply... These guys really do know their Landies. They also customise Defenders and offer "experience" rental packages with them. Some really tasteful mods Bow down . Never asked them how much they could be selling one of those. But I might get cheeky enough to ask some day.

Some of their work:

It's all Greek to most but there are subtitles too and they make sense.
