How easy is it change steering rack gaiters?

Evening
Any tips or pointers to threads for describing how to replacing the steering rack gaiters? One side on mine has split and leaked grease out. Any recommendations on type of grease needed and how much to apply??

It's just a light LMP grease, something like clutch spline grease would do it - you don't need that much, it's just to lubricate the bore of the rack and the inner ball joint on the 'drumstick'. If you can't find a motor factors that'll sell you a small tube of it, try C Bennis supplies and services in Southport, they sell small quantities of all manner of special lubricants.

Don't use cable ties - they don't have sufficient pull-down strength, there are some OEM 'cable ties lookalikes' that have a wedge where there would be a gap on a cable tie, they also have a nylon pin that is pushed through the reduced centre section once correctly tensioned. If you can, get a s/steel band for the rack end, if you don't have the correct pliers, a decent pair of sidecutters can be used to close it up, the outer end is most commonly closed with a sprung steel hoseclip type fitting.

There's so little grease used inside the gaiters it's hard to imagine it being noticable with a split gaiter.
Are you sure it's grease rather than PAS fluid ? If it's PAS fluid leaking out, it indicates a rack seal is failing.

I've changed a complete rack on my 3.6 TDV8 which involved refitting the gaiters after re-installing the hockey sticks to the bare rack assy.
it's not difficult to change the gaiter - IF you can separate the track rod end from the drum stick. They're often a pig as they corrode together if not lubricated when assembled.
As said above make sure you've got a good method of retaining the rack end of the gaiter or they'll come off. Paul,

I’ve rechecked the power steering fluid level and it’s spot on? Once I’ve finished the oil cooler change, I’ll have another look to see if there’s anything else that might be leaking? Ive rechecked the drive shaft to see if that’s split and throwing grease around but the grease would be everywhere if those were split? Don’t you just love range rovers!!

I’ve started to apply penetrating oil to the threads. The track rod ends should be straight forward as they were recently changed within the last 12months…

The new gaiters sets come with new retaining clamps - original parts.
