Range rover newbie

Hi guys

Just took the plunge and bought a FFRR last week, its in pretty good condition for a 2006, it has 160,000 miles on it and it seems to drive good.
Getting a bit of steering wobble around 50mph though but it has awful after market tiger wheels on it which are going to be removed as soon as I can find an original set.
Also found the front drivers side outside cv joint gator is leaking grease.

The arches have also been repaired previously

One question I do have though is flaking rust on the rear. Its the actual part of the car what the rear subframe is bolted to, it looks like it has some sort of rubber coating but it is flaking off and there's some rust. Its not rotted but you cam see some of it lifting.

Am I best just to wire brush it and re coat with wax oil before it gets any worse, the subframe has some flaking rust but not much. Should I do this also.?

Welcome to the mad house...

Anything you can do to thwart the rust has to be worthwhile Thumbs Up

Also worth removing the plastic sill trims as rust develops behind it at the rear and can lead to MOT failure... Shocked

Do a search for "rust" on here, loads of topics.... Pete

Cheers bud.! Thumbs Up

I had a good look at it last night, its not as bad as I first thought.
The subframe is peeling but it looks like a coating, its kind of a dark grey colour, it looks like water has got underneath it and its peeling away, there is rust present underneath but its solid, its not rotted so I would say I should sort it while I can.
Also its starting to rust where the sub frame bolts to the body, the part of the body underneath the boot has been waxoyled at some point but there's some areas that have been missed this also is peeling but its not rotten.
The rear lower arms have surface rust also.

The guy i bought it from said the rear sills had been done recently there's no bubbling in the paint, I believe him as there's a slight bit of orange peel affect low down near the trim so it's been sprayed at some stage. I will take them off for peace of mind though.

Is it best to use a certain product on certain areas.?

I was thinking black waxoyl on subframe and the underbody sealer with waxoyl on the rest

As for protective coatings on areas under the car and behind plastic sill covers and wheel arch liners etc, read Dhallworth's posts, the stuff he uses is very good. Thumbs Up

Any modern product will work, don't use Waxoyl though, it was designed back in the 70's and has just been living on it's name for years, it hasn't evolved over time and IMHO is pretty useless.. it wears off and cracks after a few years and just traps water, the black stuff they sell for sills etc just lets the rust develop underneath and eventually peels off in sheets to reveal all the rust...

Personally I like https://www.dinitroldirect.com/

But there are loads out there... Thumbs Up Pete

Unfortunately it is a regular find... just hope it hasn't gone too far back into the inner sill and the box sections around the subframe mounting.. Pete

It looks like its stopping at the seam, I haven't taken off the trim yet fully. I'm scarred to be honest Shocked

It looks like its rotted from the plastic pin that hols on the trim, its gone around the jacking point and to the outer sill.
Guy I bought it from said he would cover the cost let's see if he does.

There's no evidence of it outside the car it has deffo been done so I'm hoping its not too bad.

Sorry to say it but rust always looks better than it is, you have to cut back to clean metal to start to repair and that usually makes a large hole....

Get the cover off and see where you are, if you can see a hole then the spread of rust will probably be extensive...

Sorry to be negative, it's not want you want to hear.... Sad Pete

Yeh no worries about being negative im expecting the worst to be honest.!

I have a guy looking at it Monday night, I think I will remove the trims before I send it in, hopefully its just around the jacking point.
I sent a video to a guy I know he has a few classics and he uses a guy which sorts his stuff out, so he's the one who will do it.

I can see behind the wheel arch liner and it doesn't look like it has spread up it it looks like its been sealed in the past. But you never know whats lurking

Ah well I will know more about it on Tuesday I suppose Shocked

So I got time to take off the sill trim tonight, it was an absolute bastard removing the side steps, the last bolt like always was rusted so rounded off, I ended up removing 3 and beltling it sideways...worked though

The rust is revealed, to be fair its not as bad as I was expecting it to be, the jacking point on the underside of the sill is the worst, its rotted with a hole, but I can see through the hole and when shining a light in, it looks like the inner sill is OK.

The face of the sill feels solid but will have to be replaced, the wheel arch looks pretty nackerd too. Somebody has repaired the outer wheel arch on the lip, but hasn't bothered to even remove the liner Shocked

I didn't get chance to remove the passenger side trim, although on pulling down the trim I can see a small bit of rust but its nowhere near as bad as drivers side, the jacking point is ok.

Its going in tomorrow for a lad to have a look and see what exactly needs doing, I will ask him to remove passenger side trim and inspect it.
