PHEV issue ? Short of breath on a long incline at speed ?

On our way back from Portugal/Spain early this month, I had several times the same experience.

Going uphill ( two adults, no serious luggage ) at 130kmh on cruise control, the engine held back,
or sputtered several times under similar conditions.

First it was beyond the 'power' indication, but later I also noticed it just half way 'eco' and 'power'.

I think it might be a contradiction in the firmware of the gearbox : shift up (revs), shift down (power),
so it becomes undecisive, and switches back & forth.

Discussing it with my son, he suggested to manually shift down to see what happens.

That will be next year if we drive on such an incline.. Rolling Eyes

Anybody else has experience with this issue ? I-pace First Edition Santorini & 2nd car Mazda MX-30 Advantage red/black

Could it be a fuel issue? Are you using E10? Maybe worth getting the fuel system checked for contamination? Only Range Rovers since 1988

Hi CS, thanks for the response !

I do run on E10, but that should not be an issue.

The fuellines must be OK since I did some offroading with astronomicel fuel consumption,
and no hickups. I-pace First Edition Santorini & 2nd car Mazda MX-30 Advantage red/black

Similar car, never had this issue in similar circumstances, but maybe a visit to the dealer could help, as several transmission control module updates were performed, this year and last, for a low rumble while sitting at the red light... Yes, amusingly, the PHEV ICE engine sometimes runs during stops, and it is noisy, to the bewilderment of pedestrians... 2019 Vogue P400e

Hi Adara, thanks.

But this morning I had another time "dead 4G module" experience. Only after restarting it came back to life. If it interests you, I have another thread on that, SIM module. Last week they erased all firmware from the main system and rewrote it, to try to get any mishaps from OTA updates out. To no avail. I guess its a harnass of hardware issue beyond the sim module. I-pace First Edition Santorini & 2nd car Mazda MX-30 Advantage red/black

Was "EV" mode active? We live in the hills and if electric-mode is selected the throttle response is limited and the transmission almost refuses to downshift, even after the engine turns on. Manually deselecting the ev-button resolves this; downshifting with the paddle-shifters as your son suggested would also deactivate ev-mode.

If EV-mode was off, perhaps you felt the transition from hybrid to just petrol? Ours runs notably odd once the battery is exhausted. One work around is to activate "Save" mode while there's a little battery left. This will slightly reduce your gas mileage but it forces the rover to maintain a charge-level near where it was when Battery Save mode was activated. With the battery reserve it is able to run as a hybrid but the engine is also used to recharge the battery to near the same level. This helps for our intermittent hills but I'm not sure if it'd help on long inclines--you'd effectively have the engine charging the battery on top of the effort required to get up the hill. 2020 P400e Autobiography — Yulong White & Vintage Tan

It is worth trying. But I don't think the 'safe' mode is any help since even more power is required from the ICE.
But EV was definetely not on, since the battery was long depleted going uphill before. I-pace First Edition Santorini & 2nd car Mazda MX-30 Advantage red/black

We have been on a holiday to the Alps the end of june. No issue with powerloss. But honestly we didn't have a chance to go up a long incline with 130km/h like when it occured in France. I still use E10. I see no lower consumption when I did fill it up almost completely with it in Livigno ( € 1,72 / liter.. Mr. Green ). I-pace First Edition Santorini & 2nd car Mazda MX-30 Advantage red/black
