Possibly everyone that has ticked the 'keep me logged in' box and one of their devices is 'awake'?
It is / was an easy way for Facebook, Google, Yahoo etc. to track you across sites to 'monetise' your browsing history.

Guilty as charged! Not that I'm addicted to the site, it's just that i do a lot of night time driving in Europe so when I'm parked up having a coffee break i usually have a nosey on the site. It's much more pleasing than reading the the news.
