4.4 sdv8 engine knocking

Hi I’m new to the forum and have been looking for a solution to my issue but can’t find anything close that resembles my problem. So bought my ffrr from a garage over 3 hours away sight unseen as I was busy on a course with work and was unable to make the trip to view or collect. I understand not ideal but it’s done now. So the vehicle is a 2013 4.4 sdv8 with 95k miles full SH. Vehicle was delivered while I was at work. Upon getting home to test drive I found the vehicle to be knocking from the engine after contacting the garage they agreed to collect the vehicle and diagnose. I used the vehicle for about a week and the issue had stayed the same although I did notice a few more issues I wasn’t happy with the main one being surging under light acceleration. Garage collected the vehicle and had the vehicle for approx 3 weeks where they said the issue was egr related and would change it along with brake discs and pads as there was padding under heavier breaking washer jet replaced, door handle caps re fixed, whilst changing the egr valve they noticed oil cooler leaking and egr cooler leaking both gaskets changed test drive completed, which showed sensor related to the dpf faulty which they replaced. Now vehicle was delivered back to me again while I was at work as there only delivery date just happen to coincided with the only day I couldn’t get off work, anyway again upon test driving still knocking from engine and still surging under slight acceleration. No engine management light or faults stored. I’ve taken it to several garages to be told bottom end is shagged then another garage who specialise in Diesel engines disagree saying it’s not deep enough of a noise to be bottom end it doesn't knock at idle, only under load. So could be little end or an injector anyone had anything similar or heard of anything similar

A bottom end knock is usually pretty evident what it is. At 95k miles it’s more than likely an Injector that’s off. Big V8 diesels don’t go wrong at that mileage unless they haven’t been serviced regularly or the wrong oil has been used. The trouble is many owners only do short mile stop start driving, the engine doesn’t get hot, the oil gets contaminated and heavy sludge builds up blocking the oil galleries and intake.

They wrongly assume as they have only done a small mileage - say 6k miles in the last year that it doesn’t need a service. This is all down to emissions systems in modern engines which is then further compounded by the use of the wrong oil, or oil which isn’t synthetic.

I would get the injectors checked or replaced at that mileage - it’s highly likely that is your issue. 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

They've had one chance to fix it, I would reject it and get your money back while you still can.
Getting any repairs done will only give the supplying garage an opportunity to refuse your rejection.

Thanks Vogue, I was thinking along the lines of injectors/fuelling as the knock is virtually none existent at idle, and coupled with the surging under light acceleration it does point to a fuelling issue. I did miss out that before it went back to the dealer it was taken to my local indy who didn’t seem to have it long and diagnosed bottom end with a stethoscope at a cost of £180, but I wasn’t convinced it doesn't sound like bottom end a friend of mine came today expecting a loud knocking as much as he said it doesn’t sound right he also doesn’t think bottom end I may return to my local Indy if I can get more time off work pretty snowed under atm. I’ll ask the question if he plugged it in and if not can he do a live readout of the injectors and check those hopefully it turns out to be something other than new engine time. Also last mot to mot mileage was very low but there is service receipt at an un known garage rest have been done at jlr mostly or landrover independent. I’ll get the oil changed anyway as a precaution. Surging also seems a little more noticeable after a good open throttle on the motorway getting worse when you come off the slip and back to normal driving.

That reads like a reasonably long list of things they’ve tried to fix… did they fix the other stuff willingly and well (if so, they sound like they’re trying to be reasonable)?

When did you actually take possession of the car?

You could ask them to agree for you to take it to a reputable independent specialist or to a main dealer for an informed diagnosis to be made, if the seller is not a RR specialist (diagnosis at their cost); and then when the diagnosis is made you can decide the “what next?” between you… you have rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 but it reads like reasonable efforts are being made to resolve the issues at this stage.

Ps… on two important occasions you’ve not been present when the car has been delivered… wouldn’t be me leaving that to chance for a 3rd time… but each to their own Thumbs Up

@cass thanks, behind the scene the finance company are dealing with it as after I tried to contact the garage last Thursday I was given the run around the persons I needed to speak to were miraculously in and out of meetings all day. I assume the fact them having it back has nearly elapsed the 30day time period then they believe I’m going to be left with the issue and a warranty claim, however the work that has been carried out so far I can’t complain, and ultimately I would like to keep the vehicle as I really like it so if I can find a fix then I’d be happy for it to be fixed and keep it. Cheers

Well emailed the garage this morning with a video of the noise whilst cruising at 50 mph on the motorway, the knocking can be heard over the stereo and wind noise after them failing to call me back last week they have called me back this morning with an apology saying they will collect the vehicle again next week give me a courtesy car. They have offered a full 12 month warranty with a claim value equal to the value of my vehicle. So can I fault them for that effort ? Being it’s also a 6hour round trip to collect the vehicle saying that you’d think it would just have been rectified the last time it went back as nothing due to that issue has changed. Also anyone tell me what this is hanging down front right small rubber hose just noticed it tonight. Drain? Or should it go somewhere Laughing

Can’t help you with the hanging hose but someone else will likely be along soon…

That sounds like a good outcome to date. 12 month warranty should be a good reassurance offer, provided you’re happy with the warranty provider/ company.

They do sound like they’re trying to fettle it all for you… and based on some experiences of main dealer response times, the response times you’re getting so far are, arguably, rapid 😂 Thumbs Up

I have had a issue with a oil filter fitted and after about 1100 miles the filter collapsed and seized up the big end bearing. Any oil supply issue can spin a big end bearing causing a big end knock.
