Hi, it was a combination of things. First of all the oil filter. Use genuine LR or MAN, the one with paper bottom NOT the ones with plastic. This will make a big difference.

Hi, maybe its too late for giving advices on this issue. But your rattle on cold start or after long time not running engine is in return valves but not those ones which located behind the vanos solenoids in engine heads. There is another two which are located in engine block under the engine head gasket. Those two non return valves stops the oil leaking from engine heads to the engine block. Number 5 on the image. ![]() |

With the amount of work it takes just to access these, It'd better not come back ever again. |

Sorting various external leaks seemed to nearly eliminate the problem so that's encouraging. It would be frustrating having to tear down an otherwise

I Know this thread has been idle for a while but I thought I would add my experience in the hope that it helps someone. In January this year by timing chain guides gave up. No one local wanted the job so I ended up doing it myself. I replaced all of the guides plus the vanos solenoid non return valves and when I had finished, it all sounded lovely again. After 100 miles I did an oil and filter change and still all fine. But after a week or so I noticed a rattle at start up from cold, or at least after standing for a few hours after a decent run. I didn't do the vanos units when I did the guides as I hadn't had any trouble before the guides went, so I thought my new start up noise was probably Vanos. But I decided to drop the sump and just make sure the oil pump and pick-up strainer were still good as the rattle did make me feel it was oil starvation. But just before I dropped the sump, I read this thread and a few BMW forums and many had said about the oil filter not closing the remote filter bowl drain valve and about the importance of using the Mann filter. As luck had it, the filter I had just bought was Mann so I nipped out and swapped it last sunday making sure it was seated in the bowl before screwing the cap on. Well, I just cannot believe it! A week later and not a single rattle! I am so happy! I am also hoping I haven't just jinxed it all but it just goes to show that occasionally it is the easy fix. |
