Service intervals (L405)

I went to see an l405 for sale today, ‘67 plate MY 17. 3.0tdi

I checked the online history;

New - 07/17
Serviced - 06/19 @ 24k
Serviced - 03/21 @ 40k
Serviced - 03/22 @ 60k

I think these should be serviced every 16k or annually. Is that correct? Or was this changed for this model year?

(Why would you skip the first and third serviced on a £100k car??)

According to the Service sheets in the WIKI, they should be serviced every 12 months or 16,000 miles. I can't understand why anyone would pay that much for a vehicle and then neglect the basic servicing requirements.

Absolute maximum is 12 months or 16k miles - in reality it’s far less and down to driving style. Pre Covid mine was on 13 to 16k intervals over 12 months - those were nearly all motorway miles at highish speeds Since covid it’s down to 8k miles due to shorter trips 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

Its irrational to those of us that care, but if you just buy "a nice car" and keep it a year or so before replacing it with another, then there's little or no personal beneft it getting it serviced - very unlikely to break down in that time because of neglect - maybe because of a build issue, but not neglect. I'm sure it will have been fueled from the cheapest supermarket pumps as well...and why not if longevity isn't of any interest. Mike - MPx

I have the same age vehicle with only 45K and its been serviced FIVE times already (with a 6th “service” ignored as unproven), so my advice is to walk away.

I’ve been following member Kot’s excellent “I’m a regeneration trainee nerd” thread on here, and found my typically 16 mile urban commute twice a day equals 1 road mile to 3.83 miles to next service lost, so 4177 miles between services, and not 16,000 miles! Shocked Shocked Shocked

Unless the vehicle mileage has been proven to be mostly medium to long distance motorway mileage, it seems unlikely that vehicle has been adequately serviced and given the potential (yes, much over-hyped) issues, there may be better looked-after options out there, or at least use it as a bargaining tool to pay for a top of the range warranty, about £2200 for 3 years worth. Cool “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

I had my full 4Y service in Feb 22 by a local Indie.
Since then I have done 2 further oil changes (myself) due to service indication re fuel dilution.

30/5/22 oil & filter 2286 miles between oil change
17/9/22 oil & filter change again 23195 between oil changes.
I actually enjoy using the vacuum pump, no mess no hassle etc

I totally accept its contributed by my rural short journeys and for sure if these journeys are finishing when a active regen is in progress this adds to the dilution rate. But I wouldn't change anything Rolling with laughter OK I would consider a 5L petrol RR or a Hydrogen RR Rolling with laughter
The newer RR with the newer diesel engines so far not seen any reports regarding excessive oil dilution they must have improved the DPF architecture.

I dont have any experience of the TDV6 regarding its DPF coupling architecture but would assume its not much different than the V8.
So I would walk away, 2Y services is crazy, I would now, knowing from my experience, I would not be happy with a V8 that's only had 1Y oil changes, just think of all that diluted oil in the Engine causing reduced oil wedge and potential metal to metal contact or even carbon gunge slowly growing in the oil ways Whistle

The special low ash oil's used in JLR DPF engines, its there for a reason, reducing its effectiveness to do its job by living/ignoring fuel dilution its a ticking bomb. 2018 SE SDV8 4.4 Byron Blue

The main thing is what if it needed a warranty claim within the first three years.???
The first three years is where it should definitely have been serviced.

The new cars are called in for a service every two years 21,000 miles

Regen is at much lower speeds. 40 mph and possibly lower.

 Filters are in fact so good that in certain circumstances, when the ambient air is already polluted, a diesel car will tend to extract more particles from the air than it emits. Emissions Analytics worked with........etc etc

8,000 km or every six months. Oil is cheap. Engines are not.

The long service intervals lead to engine failure. Not a problem when on a lease/warranty, but a $25,000 problem for the second and third owner. Dan. 🇨🇦 2013 L405 5.0 SCV8

I did an oil change at 35000 miles and just flashed up service due now at 40100 miles in 5 months, short trips are my problem and it’s only just hot when I stop.
Good job I can do it with the Vac.

I’m having a main dealer and home service each year at the moment on a MY16 4.4 Neutral I’d also check that each service has had all items done, quite a few just have a oil service and nothing more which sadly still gets your a LR service entry. Sold - Bell a 2015 MY16 Loire Blue Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Mine had been serviced but not updated online by the dealer .
I called them and they uploaded the missing service info . Maybe this is the same for you .
Remember that lots of cars just sat around in 2020 , so I wouldn’t be concerned about that one being missed 4.4 AdBlu Tractor

Quick question, I have been following other threads about serving, and agree best practice is to change the engine oil & filter regularly ( around 5/6 k ) . with DPF / short driving bring down the time till service on dash.
Do you guys wait until it requests a service , then change oil & filter. Then just reset oil change only ( think this can be done via pedal press trick)
Or do service as required and reset service and oil counters with diagnostic tool?

Correct me if wrong , just changing the oil & filter in between serving intervals is good thing to do, but how does the car know if don’t reset something?
