Advice needed please

Morning folks

So Mr White van man decided my range rover needed a few extra scratches, dent and a broken rear light too add too the collection and its put me in a bit of a situation. Luckily it was caught on my dash cam when the car was parked up so I've got the driver, vehicle, reg and you can see the car roll from the impact.

I've spoken to the insurance company and told them I don't want too loose the car but I want the damage repaired at Mr White van man's cost. They've already said as its a 2006 range rover it will just be written off most likely over the phone without even sending an assessor.

Trouble I've got is, I know it's an old car and tbh the damage ain't nothing a bit of t cut can make better but its such a great car even with 175k it does everything I need it too so I prob wouldn't even think about changing it until it blows up.

The position I'm in is basically as below

Do I claim off the insurance for it too be written off and try too buy it back and get a few quid out of their insurance but possibly risk loosing it

Or

Do I go down the route of coughing up getting it repaired from a body shop but then go down the route of a small claims court once the police have dealt with the criminal side of failing to stop at the scene of an accident and I've got the details of the person so I can claim my money back.

Claiming and having a salvage mark on my car don't bother me as I'm unlikely too sell up but it's purely the risk of loosing the car altogether

What would you guys do?

Cheers folks

Allen

Given its age, I’d buff it out as best as possible, replace the rear light and invoice the white van company for the new light and move on. You’ve told your insurance to let them know. Putting a claim in will affect your future claims / policy prices etc and could easily add up to more than the cost of a new light which you might get back from the other company.

New light on ebay is about £75 … probably less than your excess.

Life is too short otherwise. V8 or else ...

I would claim on the insurance and take cash in lieu of repairs. BMW i3 Electric Car

Might be wrong, but I thought it was only your insurance that could write it off. The white van mans insurance have to fix it?

As I say, I’m no expert, but did hear that somewhere.

I'm another vote for keeping insurance out of it for such minor damage. I don't suppose you would have claimed off your insurance if you had bumped a gatepost? I believe it's another motoring myth that the other insurance MUST fix your car, if the damage was greater you couldn't expect an insurer to spend many thousands to repair a cheap old car.
That must be fixable for a tank of diesel, I'd go for a cheap fix and try to get the money back off the offender but be prepared to get nowt and move on.

If you do claim on the insurance it may well affect your premium when it comes to renewal time. The insurance company will mark you down as being more liable to have/be involved in an accident even though it wasn't your fault.

Get the other drivers details from the police then contact him and play daft. Say you would prefer to avoid insurance companies and get it fixed privately. Ask him if £250 is ok to settle. Rear lights are expensive. He can only say no, then small claims court. Thumbs Up

As you have contacted your insurance, they will now be notified of a claim!.

Therefore I would deal direct with the Third parties Insurance company & Not yours.

That way they can either repair your car or Pay a Cash in lieu to the value of the repairs. Or - If the vehicle is deemed a total loss, then yes it will catagorised ( probably CAT N) & you would be paid out the Market value less the insurances salvage value.

Cheers for the advice folks. I was always thinking it would go this way. Think I'll just have too pay up and get the damage sorted and see if I can make contact with the van man. He lives local I'm guessing as a few people locally have said they see the van daily

I wouldn't pay out yet to have it repaired, wait until you contact the third party regarding costs. It's perfectly driveable (although just a little unsightly). Thumbs Up
n.b You'll have much more difficulty in recouping your oultay if you have it repaired at your expence.

About 15 years ago, mine did….
Slight touch in a carpark. Chap left a note. £100. 00 job, Secretary misunderstood my mumbling and phoned the insurance company . I then phoned and said I wasn’t claiming , as minor and the other chap was paying.
The insurance co increased the next premium. I had had an accident Shocked . Despite no claim, they added £50.00… Filters are in fact so good that in certain circumstances, when the ambient air is already polluted, a diesel car will tend to extract more particles from the air than it emits. Get a quote from a professional, report the accident to the police and send a letter of demand for the cost of the quote.
