Accessing boot from rear seats

I transport my dog in the boot in cage. I was just reading a post about a failed tailgate and wondered how I would get the dog out of the boot.

The rear seats fold down electrically from switches in the boot that I wouldn’t be able to get to and the electric reclining back seats only move a small amount using the controls on the side of the seat , not enough to get anything out of the boot.

Is there some kind of manual override as I can’t find anyway of freeing the dog.

All hypothetical at the moment but want an escape plan if the tailgate fails

Many thanks AKA DiscoDunc

Mine has a ‘ski hatch’ - if you lower the arm rest, there’s a button in the top of the seat back that opens the centre section of the seat into the boot space.

Thanks. Yes mine has a ski hatch but it’s not big enough to empty the contents of the boot and get the cage out.

I’m thinking the only option is to forcibly rip the seats back if possible or smash the rear window but in an emergency that would take too long to get the cage out

I’m hoping I can find way to manually fold the seats quickly AKA DiscoDunc

What Stan says....

Also, I think you will find all the windows are laminated glass in which case you will have scared the poor dog to death before you break through one of those..... Shocked Pete

Thanks Stan
I’m thinking I might have to relocate the switch.
Ive still got the problem in the event of power failure though. Seems to be a bit of a safety oversight by JLR. Having all this electrical equipment is fine until it fails.
I’m guessing the same problem exists on other models? How do passengers get out out of row 3 of 7 seater models I wonder (D5etc) AKA DiscoDunc

might be worth having a look in the WM and see if theres a manual pull lever for the seat down..or look at the seat construction for some way to disengage the rear of the seat so it folds manually.. ... - .- -.

I've not got anything useful to add but wanted to say this is a really good point that I'd not considered before. Question FFRR SDV8 Autobiography

Not got a 405, but I know folk with the 322 had dog cages with a door on both front and back, so you can still get the dog out if the rear of the car is damaged in some way.

You obviously need the seats to fold down first, and I can’t help there I’m afraid.

How big is the cage / dog ?

Can the cage be mounted against the ski hatch - then worst case you would 'only' need to cut a hole in the cage ?

I'm lucky that our dogs are small enough to live on the parcel shelf with a half height guard.

These guys seem to offer a rear escape hatch option - https://dogtransit.co.uk/shop/dog_transit-...2013-2017/

Or the official LR divider has an escape hatch - https://www.landrover.co.uk/ownership/acce...ories.html

For the very rare occurrence this is likely to happen, if your worried the simplest option I would take is a hammer under the drivers seat / or suitable steering wheel lock, and just knock the rear screen in - laminated or not a few whacks with a suitable implement will soon sort it 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

I do not have an answer to this, but in the meantime it may be worth carrying one of the special small / seatbelt cutter / hammers for escaping through the car windows if trapped. See below link...

Not a good answer but it could give you some piece of mind. I always make sure these are in our family cars.
Good thinking on the risk assessment.
