Upper rear tailgate years

Hi all

Looking to replace my rusty rear upper tailgate on my new to me facelift 2010 model , I’m seeing that the older ones don’t rust as much but seem to have a different trim below the rear window …. Where as mine does not have this

Would removing the glass and refitting mine to an older tailgate resolve this or will it need that trim can’t find a santorini black anywhere so will need to be painted no matter what it seems

Thanks all

That trim just slides out sideways. They weren’t fitted to the later cars. Likewise, the glass trim on the edges at the side wasn’t fitted to earlier cars. Supposed to stop water dripping in the boot when you open the top tailgate in the rain.

I fitted a 2007 tailgate to my 2003 car when I had that. Think I paid £55 for glass company to come and swap glass, as one was privacy glass and one not.

As they got newer, more and more recycled steel was used….. so tended to rust a bit more. Trouble now is, the early cars are 20 years old, so those tailgates are also rusting “naturally”….

02 - 06 = BMW owned Best German Steel Used

06 - 09 = FORD owned Ford cut corners / quality so... Slightly Rusty

09 - 12 = TATA owned Cheap SH*T steel used so... MOST Rust.

Any metallurgists here to identify chemical differences in German vs TATA (Indian steel) ? IME all mild steel will rust readily and enthusiastically when exposed to the elements. It's just as likley that corners cut in the paint shop are responsible. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I’ve been wondering the same - be interested to understand why recycled steel is more susceptible to rust assuming identical prep. & paint treatment - carbon content perhaps?

With that said, there’s no doubt in my experience the earlier tailgates rust less on a like for like age basis.

I replaced a rusted 2011 tailgate with a 2004 one and there are some differences in the various wiring apertures, although nothing that can’t be overcome. It also requires the glass out, as the loom is clipped into place between the frame & the glass and extracting it with all the connectors attached would be impossible.

??? So who supplies the steel now?

It cant be British Steel as most of the plants have been closed by TATA
I do think that the rot problem is a combination of poor quality control regarding steel quatity / protection prior
to painting, anti rust coating etc.
Brake pipes are a case in point, mine were like paper when i replaced them, yet my Skoda vrs, 2 years older and done more miles, b/pipes are like new.
Go figure !!

replaced my 2010 rear rusted upper tailgate. purchased a replacement 06 on ebay and had it resprayed. The paint shop swapped over the glass and all the lekey bits and added the older rubber trim which look quite good. It cost a bit but i'm getting my money back slowly as I every time i open to boot I dont get showered with little bits of rust Thumbs Up cost wise - all in prob circa £700 2010 3.6 TDV8 Vogue

Well documented that 80's Fiat Lancia and Ferrari all suffered from rust issues due to the Italian government insisting that they used steel with a high proportion of recycled steel... this was the start of the problem, the woefully appalling rust prevention didn't help as well...

When I looked into it there are two tailgates used across the years, both are interchangeable but minor differences...

A new tailgate is £1,100 + vat.... Shocked Pete
