4.4 SDV8 Crank Pulley

Afternoon all,

Just a query arising from my 2016 model 4.4 SDV8 being at trusted Indy this morning for an oil service and general look over.

It’s been noticed that the crank pulley appears to have a wobble on when viewed with engine running. I’ve seen it and definitely seems to be the case.

I believe the pulley incorporates a rubber type material in the centre as a damper / balancer hence suspect this may be degrading resulting in the “wobble”.

Question is has anyone else experienced this issue? Mileage is approx 125000 with full history and mainly motorway miles.

What is wobbling? The centre rubber bit or the outer edge of the pulley?

Whilst I’ve not looked at the tdv8, my previous evoque had a rubbery spongey centre bung in the middle of the crank pulley. I cant see what purpose it would serve other than protecting the crank bolt from the elements cause it didn’t really weigh much. It was held on tightly with some sort of adhesive too.

If we are talking about the same thing, I wouldn’t worry about it. However if the outer edge and pulley grooves are wobbling, then yes, that’s a different matter. V8 or else ...

Thanks for that, done some further research and it turns out the pulley is all metal construction, so a bit of a puzzler as to why it seems to be “wobbling”.

Some further investigation into the issue this next week. Unfortunately a new pulley is in the region of £600 for the part alone!

I’m hoping maybe the centre bolt is slightly loose, for example if not torqued up correctly in the factory or if for some reason it’s been “got at” subsequently….

Will certainly update with findings and outcome in case anyone else has a similar issue down the line.

It won't be solid as it includes a harmonic balancer. There will be a thin rubber layer to allow the outer section to move a little.

That’s interesting, thanks. So likely that the pulley is a two piece assembly with a thin rubberised element between the pieces. Current

It is. Zoom in to the pic above and just to the outside of the section with the balancing holes drilled you can see the rubber mass-isolating ring.

My wife’s Q5 3.0 TDI has a harmonic balanced crank pulley and it failed around 12 months ago and fell off, fortunately on the driveway so it just fell on to the undertray. Pig to get at the bolts to replace it but possible. If yours is showing signs of wear it’s surely a good plan to replace it before it inevitably lets you down. Late 2015 L405 Autobiography 4.4 in Loire blue with silver roof

Fully agree with that! Actually booked in for the pulley changing this coming week.

Unfortunate that the issue has occurred along with the astronomical price for a replacement pulley, around £600 plus fitting costs. Not something I can attempt myself.

However lucky the issue was spotted as could be far worse if the pulley let go on motorway etc with risk of serious damage and the danger element. Current
