Auxiliary Power Socket question.

All my auxiliary power sockets only become live when the ignition is turned on, but the user manual seems to think otherwise…

”Auxiliary power sockets remain live with the starter switch turned off. Battery drain resulting in failure to start the engine may occur if accessories remain plugged in whilst the engine is switched off.”

Did they change this in later cars or is mine an anomaly?! 2009 pre-facelift 3.6 TDV8.

My 2008/9 Vogue had a constant live in the boot cigar-plug socket. My 2012 has nothing left live a minute after switching off the ignition. All the cigar-plug sockets stay live for a minute after engine off, but then go dead! The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom Smile

I need to double check the boot one but all three 12v sockets in the car lose their live the moment the ignition is turned off. Strange that it is both different from yours and the user manual.

Guessing there is no hidden way to control this that I don’t know about but the previous owner did?! 2009 pre-facelift 3.6 TDV8.

The later ones don’t stay live. My TD6 did. I spent best part of £300 on a decent coolbox that now won’t stay on without the engine running.

There is a relatively simple mod you can do in the rear fuse box to make them permanently live, not done it myself. Think there is a how to or similar on the forum somewhere.

All the accessory / cigar lighter sockets are controlled via relays, which shut down the circuit to those sockets on engine off. I had some of my sockets live after ignition off and after doing some hunting found out the reason. Some vehicles have the relays removed and a metal bypass link inserted to keep them live permanently. If you check the wiring and relay configurations for the Range Rover electrical systems it will show which relays control what sockets. You can remove the relevant relay and install the bypass link to make the sockets permanently live. Thumbs Up

That’s interesting and hopefully simple to change if needed.

In truth I’m fine with mine being off when the car is off, it’s either a usb phone charger or an electric tyre inflator that I need it for so light use at best. Will check the boot one but from memory that is off all the time too. 2009 pre-facelift 3.6 TDV8.

I bought the Waeco Tropicool TCX 21. It's German, so must be the best.... it also heats up as well as cools, so ideal for the takeaway trips.

They make smaller ones, but the build quality is nice.

Thanks. I imagine I would utilise one mostly on the move but going back to the threads main question - if my boot 12v does work with the engine off how long would I be able to use say a small 8L cool box before it would drain the battery? 2009 pre-facelift 3.6 TDV8.

Not answered your question I know, but you can get a power lead add on that cuts the power if the battery voltage drops too much.

Good to know. I take it the L322 never came with an centre console fridge option like the L405’s? 2009 pre-facelift 3.6 TDV8.

Assuming it is a Peltier type, take the current rating and divide the Ah rating of the battery by it. That will give you the number of hours before you need a jump start. e.g. 110Ah battery will supply 7A for ~15.7 hours, but you need to take off the starting current (glow plugs & starter current for ~20 seconds) so that you leave enough headroom to start the car. Or get yourself a voltage dependent relay that will shutoff at 11.6V, that should leave you just enough to start the car, assuming it's not winter temperatures - because you wouldn't need a coolbox if it was.
