Scotland 2012 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Stornoway Grey

Hi,
I have just joined the club and have bought my first Range Rover. The second day I had it, I got the dreaded click. I've bought a new starter and am debating if I fit it or get the shop to. Mike, how did you go with the fitting of yours?

I bought my replacement starter back in April because I got the dreaded click and wanted to get it changed whilst the weather was decent..... however seven months later it has never “clicked” again so the new one is still in the box.
Sod’s law says it will fail now winter is approaching, but a friend has offered me the use of his workshop/large garage when I eventually need to change it.

Thanks for the reply Mike.
I think I will try and give it a crack this weekend as I'm planning to do a bit of driving through the Highlands this winter and dont want to get stuck. It seems to do it much less if I push and hold the starter button until it is running. No doubt Ill be referring to Mpirie's guide that he has posted.

Hi All,
HELP.....
So I installed the new starter motor yesterday. Re-connected all the wires and cleaned all the contacts. Pushed the start button and got nothing. Didn’t even sound like it was trying to engage. Couldn’t hear a big click like from solenoid or anything. Checked all connections again and still nothing. So I pulled the new starter back out and installed the old. I got the solenoid click twice but then it started.
Mpirie instructions are perfect and made the job much easier.
I then connected the new starter to the battery with jumper leads and got it to spin up no problems........ slightly stumped as to what is going on.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I guess the only upside is that I’m getting good at getting the starter out and back in Very Happy

Ozzy a quick question did you raise the suspension, remove drivers wheel then lower the suspension to get the clearance on the anti roll bar? Presumably must still have battery connected to start engine to lower suspension?

Massive thanks to Mpirie instructions, changed mine today on my 2012. All went well. Bit of fiddle but got it done. Put car in access mode before jacking it up which meant anti roll bar was in lowest position. Had no issues. Started on the button once all back together. See how it is in the cold weather and hopefully do another 100k! 2012 4.4 TDV8 AB Santorini Black with Ivory / Jet interior

I had the dreaded click however i had other issues that soon followed that resulted in a new battery (Genuine LR one AGM) since i fitted that about 6months ago not happened since! 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - Current

Grand Cherokee - Gone
Discovery V8 (LPG) - Gone
Discovery TD5 - Gone

Yes have read that also. When I bought the car 2 years ago I fitted a new AGM battery. Wasn't anything wrong but changed anyway as know old batteries can cause lots of issues. Turned out was the original one, had 9 years so worth changing.

Get the starter mod done, it continues to work for me very well even with low SOC. The issue here is the trigger wire sensitivity/resistance change over a period of time. I have a secondary solenoid installed, but some have upgraded the wire.

Essentially I have spliced into the current trigger wire very close to the EJB (picture 4) to drive a smaller relay that supplies / services the starter relay solenoid directly from the battery.

Ive done three things (in this order) to greatly reduce the frequency with which clicking occurs...

1) Replaced the battery
2) Replaced the solenoid on the starter motor
3) Upgraded the battery

And then a fourth
4) Try a few things......... This has reduced the instances of click-click the most!
- Deployable side steps switched off.
- Aircon switched off before switching off the car (so its not on when starting).
- With each startup make sure the Press Brake warning sign goes away as Im pressing the brake to make sure my foot is on it deep enough
...and then start.

With all these things I find now the only reason the car would give me the click-nonsense is if it is really hot - like ive driven it the whole day, then stop somewhere, then restart to go another bit. And even that is not a pattern.
