4.4 v 5.0

Hello everyone
I’m currently looking for a 5.0sc but noticed there is much more choice in the 4.4 diesel.

I was wondering what the real world mpg are of both ? Is there any real benefits of owning a petrol ?

If you need to ask that last question then I don't think the 5.0sc is for you. Oil burners are great for lorries/buses/plant/tractors...and cars where MPG is valued above anything dynamic or if you spend your life towing something heavy. In all other respects, a petrol car is a better place to be.

The 4.4 will certainly return better mpg, but with the current differential between petrol and diesel prices the actual cost per mile driven may be similar (too hungover to use a calculator today).

The petrol will be ULEZ compliant, if that’s an issue for you, whereas pre-2015 diesels will not.

And the petrol is more fun to drive. Sadly it was out of my budget when I was shopping.

On reasonably long journeys 32/34 mpg is easily achievable, day to day short journeys and not hanging around 25/30 is fairly normal.

Sub 7 seconds 0-60 is unbelievable in a car of this size and the power band for overtaking at motorway speeds still brings a smile to your face - these engines just keep on pulling like a train and don’t stop until the limiter cuts in.

I’ve had several TDV8’s and SDV8’s and on several occasions unbelievably in the 40’s is achievable. I managed to find these old images

The key question is what sort of driving you will do. See the LR website comparing petrol, diesel and PHEV models.

If you do mainly short journeys, stop-start traffic and lower speeds you risk a diesel getting clogged up with tarry residues and these will eventually cause problems. With post Sept 15 models you also have the faff of AdBlue and the extra complexity may affect long term reliability. If you do mainly longer journeys and especially towing then the diesel is the better bet.

The 5.0SC is quieter at lower speeds and picks up speed pretty effortlessly, one needs to watch not to get caught speeding. Not that the 4.4 SDV8 is slow, but the 5.0SC is at a higher level. The diesel is, I think, better off road and on bad surfaces, e.g. a steep junction exit with a broken surface and poor visibility where one needs to move off smartly, the 5.0 can get the traction control coming on quite easily, that is less of an issue with the diesel. The 5.0 SC tows perfectly well, but mpg suffers.

I'd say fuel consumption on the 4.4SDV8 is maybe two thirds of what the 5.0SC gets, so if you get 30mpg in the diesel you'd get 20 mpg in the 5.0SC. As posted above diesel is more expensive and you also have to pay for AdBlue. The AdBlue diesels also have smaller fuel tanks so the range difference is not as great as the mpg figures might suggest. Consider also what mileage you are doing, if not that much then the extra cost per year of the 5.0SC is not so important. One downside of the 5.0SC is that it is only available as AB, so if you'd be happy enough with Vogue or VSE then there is an extra cost for trim you don't need.

I chose the 5.0SC mainly because I think the powertrain is less complex and more robust than the AdBlue diesel. While I liked the diesel and it maybe suits the car better, the 5.0SC is a bit more refined and a bit more exhilarating to drive, and while I do drive off road reasonably regularly and tow from time to time, the downsides there do not outweigh the advantages. Also there is the point that we're not going to be allowed cars like this much longer, so I wanted to make the most of the remaining opportunity. Only Range Rovers since 1988

I’ve not owned a 5.0 (am looking now) but, having owned a 2016MY 4.4 for 4 years the only point I’d make is that Adblu isn’t a faff or expensive. Over 40k miles I only filled it up twice (once after the ‘restricted range’ warning came on within 40 miles of buying it from Guy Salmon Shocked ). I don’t know whether its presence affects reliability

Canada 2013 Range Rover 5.0 SC V8 Santorini Black

My 5.0 SCV8 mileage:

Typical commuting: 16-20L/100km (14-17.5 Imp mpg)

Highway trips: 10-12L/100km (23-28 Imp mpg)

Close to 5 second 0-60. Effortless acceleration. Not possible to get the 4.4 diesel in Canada. Dan. 🇨🇦 2013 L405 5.0 SCV8

Thanks for the update , it will mainly be local driving with the odd longer trip to visit family so I guess petrol would make sense

if I buy a post 2017 model does that mean the tax will eventually be £165?

Can anyone tell me what the main difference between the AB and the SV-AB are.

+35BHP (MY17 - more from MY18) and different s/w settings
Lower ride height
Lower tow weight limit

Things that don't:
SVO Pallete paint
Style 514 wheels
Diamond quilt seat detail
Red flappy paddles
Knurled knobs
Lots of SVO badges

In Canada and the USA, we also got the 5.0 non-supercharged for a year or two in HSE spec before the swap to the 3.0SC. Did the UK get this engine?
