To Buy Or Not To Buy 5.0SC

Hi all, I'm new to the full fat forum but not to the Disco & RRS forums which I have a found to be a great confidence booster in times of need! Rolling with laughter
My question to you all is that I'm looking to purchase a 2010 L322 5.0SC and I'm finding it really hard to find one without missing service history at my price point, which is 20k
I have found one with 77K on the clock but the first 8 years of its service history is missing but from 2018 onwards its documented.
My Question Is: Would you assume that the first owner having just paid 80 odd thousand for a new car would have had it serviced for the first 8 years but happened to not have had the service book stamped. Or if it's just missed the first 8 years of servicing?
There is also another for sale with the reverse scenario, 84k on the clock & with service history upto 2018 and then nothing until 2023. That particular car has just had the timing chain and injectors done with a bill of 5.5K.
So I guess I'm asking would you leave both cars well alone or maybe do you think either one is worth looking at.

Cheers in advance. Thumbs Up 2010 RR Autobiography 5.0SC

With that budget, I’d hold out for one with a complete & evidenced service history (i.e ideally supported by invoices, not just stamps in the book).

You may have to wait given the relative scarcity of the 5.0 SC but aside from the comfort you’ll have, if / when you sell it on, it’ll be so much easier Thumbs Up

I’d recommend following the ABC rule when considering any car, Assume nothing, believe nothing, challenge everything (politely). Jonathan

Hi, wise words, thanks for that. At the end of the day it will only be used as a weekender but don’t want the decision to bite me on the ares, financially that is…. & as you say just wait it out until the right car turns up.

When I was looking for mine I did consider a LWB version.
There seem to be a few of these about as folks fight shy of them believing them to be a PITA to park due to the length.
The width is of greater interest when parking, the LWB is approx 20 cms longer so not much really.
I would suggest take your time and approach them with an open mind, if that is possible for any of us when buying cars Very Happy Very Happy

Depends a bit on how long you intend to keep the car, and how lucky you are.

Length of time will impact depreciation. Current prices are stupid high for virtually all used cars and IMO there will be a correction at some point. When I sold my 2012 just over 2 years ago, the WBAC price was ~£13k. The car has since been sold on for lots more than that. If you get out again before the correction then little loss, if after, you'll be looking at dropping £10k.

Luck will impact running costs. Get a good one and its £100s per year, get unlucky and its many £1000s. Mike - MPx

Here is some info from my experiences I have found that a RR that is used is much better all round than one which has been sitting - I bought my l322 11 years ago for 13.5k - 14.5k with extra winter wheels and towbar bike rack it had done just under 60k it now has 235k + my usage is 15 to 20k per year some years it costs virtually nothing in maintenance others it has been quite heavy - I replace engine oil every 8k approx gearbox and diffs every 30k front arms every couple of years and chose to change everything on the front of the engine alt, pulleys , aircon etc at 150k as they were starting to get noisy also front airbags at about 120k and had both diffs reconditioned at 180k. I suppose what I am saying is that because I use it it is quite cheap to run as even if I get nothing for it it has only lost just over a grand a year my last Jag lost a grand a week.
Dont be frightened of a high mileage one and remember service history is just a stamp in the book who knows what has actually been done.
Hope this helps and good luck in the search

Always worth running the plates or better still the VIN through Topix to see if any missing history is on there?
Worth checking for the supplying dealer's details... Bootlid glass sticker, number plates, or service book? Contact them and ask if the missing history is on their systems? Thumbs Up

Cheers all....
The selling independent dealer said that they had contacted LR to see if they could get the 8 years missing history but apparently its not on their system. He's reply to this was that the car would be another 5k if it's had full service history.
I guess I should add that I do intend on keeping the car as a project for weekends & retirement. I do appreciate that there is no such think as a cheep Land Rover to run outside of a warranty but I do believe that you can mitigate a lot of foreseeable problems with a bit of due diligence. This is also why I have chosen to go for petrol over diesel. Super charger is cheeper to repair/replace than turbos and no DPF's is a big factor as it will only do short journeys and about 3000k a year. 2010 RR Autobiography 5.0SC

Stand to be corrected but I believe the OSH with no physical service book only started from the L405 model Range Rovers, not L322’s, so as Craig mentioned, you’d need to be able to identify which specific dealers serviced it and contact them to see if they can provide any details, although having tried this myself previously, it generally turns up nothing or data protection waffle. Jonathan
